80s music includes - but they may not play these hits:

Boy George and the Culture Club (karma chameleon) Queen (another one
bites the dust) The show mentioned George Michael and Wham (wake me up
before you gogo) David Bowie dressed as a clown, and in a dress or gown,
smearing his make-up (ashes to ashes, under pressure), Miami Vice had
Jan Hammer for the theme of the show and Glenn Fry (you belong to the
city) The show mentioned Wang Chung (live and die in LA , everybody have
fun tonight) but mainly for the song (Fire in the Twilight) in the movie
Breakfast Club Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam (head to toe, lost in
emotion) Atlantic Starr (yours forever).

IF dressing the part if a prom dress is not primary, a 80s outfit has
many possibilities - ie, henley tee in a white dinner jacket and khakis
(Don Johnson - Miami Vice)

Call For Comments - DLV 2013 dates

Postby External Poster » Mon Sep 10, 2012 11:15 pm

I am in favor of a prom nite.

Yes I know trying to pack a big prom dress in a suit case can be a big
hassel. I remember how I had to pack 2 big suitcases for a five day
cruise. Some of the clothes did get a little wrinkled and it did not
help to have to drive 900 miles with the suitcases.

I am wondering if there are any places in Las Vegas that rents prom
dresses. As for me, anyone who knows me, knows I always carry my dresses
where ever I go. I still remember missing going my high school prom
because I grew up as a poor kid, but I was fortunate in the regard there
was food on the table and we had clothes and books for learning, but
little else for frillies. Also at that time it would have been suicide
for me to wear a prom dress in the 60's, I remember thinking how nice it
would have been if I could have.

As for when to have DLV, I vote for the first week.

A Google search for "Vegas prom dress rental" brings up countless hits.

Now, if any of those places are open minded enough ... :)

Bearing in mind the current economic climate I would think any place
with a financial brain knowing there are <who knows how many> dress
rentals up for grabs would jump at the chance. If you got a group of
like-minded individuals together and approached such a place I'm sure
they'd bite your arm off!

Let's keep the prom show in mind closer to the scheduled dates whatever
they are.

Been surfin' the net on this. I see many web sites that specialize more
on bridal dress rentals, and tuxes. With all the drive thru wedding
chapels, I can see why. Some places sells what was rentals - and its not
cheap, and is limited as in sizes and styles - so there must be some
places that rent prom gowns. I saw a very few web sites that rented
prom dresses. Some didn't have the prices posted, others were per day
rentals, I found only one was around sixty and up.

Another option based on prices is to see a tailor.

I wonder how much a tailor in LV can whip up a prom dress style from
scratch to one's measurements. Would it be cheaper than buying a
already made one? I know a few locally where I live that are
transplants from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, that
besides adjusting clothes, they made custom clothing from scratch in
their countries. They are quite good at creating any kind of clothes,
in whatever material one wants, and can whip up a prom dress within days
(one day for measurements, one day for fitting, third day to pay for it
and pick it up), based on just a photo, and it can be made in whatever
color one wanted, fitted to your body. They have been also cheaper than
the retail price, and are really good at making it its really close to
the retail one.

The basic no frills prom dress was at one time around $125 total for
material and labor, but that was about 5 years ago, and I went with a gg
that needed a formal gown. She said that if one finds the right
tailor, its worth it and depending on what one wants, the bottom line is
that its cheaper than buying it retail, and getting what you want as far
as style, than choosing pre-made styles that is what is available from a
store. Some chinese friends just goes to their tailor for certian kinds
of clothes, like the traditional cheong-sum chinese dress or the tang
style tops.

One chinese tailor replaced a body length plastic zipper on a jump suit
with a heavy duty brass one for me, and it looked like it came from the
factory. I really depends on the ability of the tailor.

I haven't chimed in on the prom themed event yet. It's probably not
something I would gravitate to personally but I can certainly see the
allure. However, I can offer some advice on finding such a dress.

The best time to find a great deal on a dress is when you don't need
one. A perfect example is that during DLV 2012, I browsed the dress
racks at Macy's, not needing anything but with an open mind if I found
something I loved. Didn't see anything. However, on the Monday when I
returned home, I was browsing in Macy's on my lunch and found a
wonderful Tadashi Shoji long dress that was over 80% off which was
exactly my size. Didn't need it but of course I bought it with DLV 2013
in mind.

If you try to find something in Vegas, whether purchase or rental,
chances are you won't find THE perfect dress if you manage to find one
at all. The pressure will just be too high.

Right now we are sitting about three months after prom season so with a
little patience, there is a great chance you might find something on the
super-clearance racks no matter where you shop. And while I know some
people enjoy thrift stores but I would recommend looking at consignment
shops. Regardless, whether for a prospective prom event or just to find
that perfect stylish dress or gown for another DLV event, you can find
that perfect dress and perhaps save a little $$$ at the same time if yo
start the search sooner than later.
