Sin city prom

Based on some "proms" I have attended where I live, I think it would be
possible to talk some local gay club into having a "prom" which would be
available to DLV attendees and locals.

Between us and the locals this should provide the "mass" to appeal to
someone on an economic basis. The club that used to do the annual prom I
attended decorated, had a photographer, prom and provided inexpensive
finger foods in a prom like manner. Drinks of course were at their
regular cost. The cover charge was nominal.

This would keep the prom simple to plan, low cost, and offer attendees a
choice of dress from formal dress which would be encouraged, but not
required and appeal to a wider audience.

Trying something simple like this gathered no interest last spring and
the "prom" developed into an expensive and complicated affair that was
doomed to failure and never happened. DLV attendees in my opinion will
not pay a lot for a prom and especially one centered in an out of the
way unknown place.

I remember your suggestion quite well. I also remember that
I remarked that I was sure that a place like Goodtimes or
Escape could be rather easily talked into co-sponsoring
such a thing on what might otherwise be a slow evening.

IIRC, the main reason that this didn't get any traction
was that it was perceived as being "not mainstream enough"
for many of our attendees.

Surprisingly, another suggestion which did not get any
traction either was one to adopt a "prom" or "formal"
theme to something like the Trevi dinner or the Bahama
Breeze dinner. Those are about as mainstream as an
activity can get!

This "mainstream-ness" or lack of same was one of the
concerns of the proposed IAC affair, but what appeared
to be the real reason it was voted down was the high
price point and the lack of an option to attend just
to socialize (without eating) at a lower price.

I have no real clue if the suggestion for something at
Paris is really workable, but there can be absolutely
no question about it being mainstream (enough). That
is, of course, assuming that no Rhodes Scholar among
us suggests renting a ballroom or meeting room at Paris
for said affair. :)

Just m2cw. I would think that doing a joint prom with one of the gay
bars would be much more workable. It would take somebody local working
with one of the bars but a shared activity would sort of be a 1st and
probley be much better attended and if we had a king a queen it would
give us a better field for choice of king *lol*

I would definately want to be in the running for Prom King, considering
I am one of the very few male SOs @ DLV

With our model for DLV, I really don't see how a date or
escort for such a thing could be required or even expected.

Say we go with a prom, would I be expected to have a date or come alone;
and if I need a date, should I take the macho initiative and shop around
for that secret someone special, or just wait at home, alone and sullen,
yearning in silence and dispair until some princess charming asks me for
a date? What's a girl to do? Being a true and authentic scholar from
Rhodes, I might rent us a ballroom at some fancy casino, and then I
could have all the dates I ever dreamed of, but that ain't gonna'
happen. I think Mindy was on the right track back on 5/18 when she
suggested using the Escape Lounge; it would go easy on everyone's budget
and we could work a Thrift Store Fashion Show in there somewhere too.

I can understand having a activity allowing for those
that want to dress formal/prom outfits.

I still don't like the idea of a 'Prom' complete with a
King and Queen. I share the sentiments with others
of not having a event that involves comparisons or
even competes with everyone attending (and not
attending) to how they look, or any other possible
discriminatory judging criteria that will bring on status
levels on every attendee. I can see this with what I
am hearing ... a DLV crowned 'King' and tiara 'Queen'
title status. DLV ages ranges from 20s to 70s and above,
with different looks and backgrounds.

Who is to say one is better than the other?

I can see having just a formal dinner and possible
social/dance at a mainstream venue for those that
want it there, or for safer places for newbies have it
at a transgendered accepting bar, and even tie it
with the limo tour that fits the attire too. Everyone
is equal and no competition.

A prom at any location brings up some concerns.

Dancing with only other attendees being a bit awkward.

We've had reservations made in in advance and then
canceled at the last minute for whatever reasons,
like change in management or new management not
fulfilling the reservation of a contract, or not accepting
our group after finding out who we are and canceling
the reservation.

Bottom line individual cost requirements for room/rentals,
food/catering, and decorating room and tables for the
full 'prom' effect. Also related to this will be a minimum
required number of people to attend and to pay for this.

There is a problem of the organizers planning events
that was highly wanted and discussed in planning and
was supposed to have alot of attendees going, only
ending up for whatever reasons with low or no attendance.

If a event had no down payment or prepayment bill
that is good, but we've had some that did require
deposits or costs for supplies or whatever, leaving the
organizer burned to pay out of their own money with
no chance of recovery because a very few or no one
showed up to help foot the bill. DLV has had events
end like this.

Annie,

Sorry if you took me seriously on that quip, it was just me trying to
inject a little facetious, self effacing levity into the conversation.
I couldn't possibly be serious about such a thing, and was just playing
for a laugh - the typical adolescent delimma about prom night, you know,
the boy's apprehension about having to make a big jump for his girl, and
the girl's worry about not being asked for a date and left out of the
running, and all that. I'm sort of new at this; DIVA was my first
'out' ever and I'm still trying to find my wings, so to speak. I do
realize the importance of our events and the group's consensus on such
affairs.

Cordially,

Cynthia Phillips

The way I understand it, after some clarification, is that
the "Prom Court" would be chosen by random draw. I'm cool
with that. I share the concern about such things as a popular
vote or "looks" contest.

>Dancing with only other attendees being a bit awkward.

Some DLVers are indeed hung up about dancing. However, at
DLV 2010 I can remember several activities at which dancing
occurred, and yes, those who are comfortable with it did it.

I saw it at Escape Lounge, at Bahama Breeze, and, obviously,
at Paris. Two of those three venues have been suggested as
possibilities for a prom-type activity.

In this thread, I can't recall any suggestions to go the
rental/ballroom route. The suggestions so far (Paris and
Escape) are both very low-maintenance and low-cost, which
our people tend to like.
