Pinkfest maps (was Preliminary Pinkfest schedule)

Postby Valerie » Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:28 pm

This does look like fun.

I created a map of the activity locations (if I got them all right). It is available at https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit? ... Do1VIwIpwY

Do let me know if I misplaced anything.

This helped me figure out what to do with respect to hotels and transportation.

Yes, I think it's one of the best Pinkfest lineups of all time.

It looks like you have everything in there correctly. Thanks for creating this. I see you even have most/all of the hotels mentioned on the lodging page.

One other option that will be available is that everyone who responds affirmatively to the RSVPs sent out right before Pinkfest will get a link to the detailed schedule which allows you to "drill down" to venue info and a map. This works quite nicely with most smartphones.

We "borrow" the scheduling tools we use for DLV to do this, and it works quite nicely for Pinkfest as well.

Ginger has also created a set of screens with an example of getting from point A to point B using Google's transit info. It's still a work in progress, is in the context of DLV and not Pinkfest, includes some Las Vegas specific stuff, but should be workable to find train/bus routes for Pinkfest as well.

It's on line at: http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dt/

This is still a work in progress at this time, very rough.

One missing piece (coming shortly, most likely prior to inkfest) is a screen showing how to use the schedule map as the "to" address for transit information.

Preliminary Pinkfest schedule - comments

I think the map is great!

I would caution people who are not familiar with driving around a big
city that the cost of parking and convenience of walk= ing, taxis, mass
transit, etc means having a car is not really needed - in fact it can be
a frustrating pain to have a car in Chicago.

If you get a hotel in the River North area, walking and taxis are much
easier and cheaper than getting around by car to most events. The few
outlying events in Oak Park and in Lake View near Boystown are easy to
get to with the el train too. Even Tommy Guns is close enough by taxi,
but you can also take the el.

But like any big city it is important to know where you are going and to
be safe!

Thanks for the map.

I would echo and agree with this! I've found that I enjoy Pinkfest (and DLV, actually) much better when I do not have a vehicle.

I had a car twice at Pinkfest, a rental in 2001 and I drove to Chicago in 2002. Both times the car mostly sat in the hotel's parking area. (I had hotels with on-site parking both times.)

From 2003 on I just picked up a transit pass at the airport upon landing. The $$$ saved on a rental easily pays for the transit pass and the occasional taxi ride.

I've also found that I enjoy it more if I pay a bit more and stay in the River North area in a nice hotel (but not one of the high-end ones) with the expected quality of room and amenities. I've done the tiny room places and I think it's well worth it to have a modern type hotel room such as Hampton or Hilton Garden.

The map in the first post has been updated to reflect the most recent tentative schedule.
