Need Advice re Makeup/Cosmetics

I'm not sure if this question is appropriate for DLV; if not, then
please just delete it.

I plan on attending DLV for the first time this year and need some
advice on makeup/cosmetics. Although I've been dressing for many
decades, I've never used makeup because I never went out. Now I need to
turn my manly face into a womanly face and have 5 weeks left to learn
and practice as much as I can. Fortunately, I can devote most of my
waking hours to this endeavor.

I learned quite a bit this past week from various websites, forums,
youtube and even bought Lucille Sorella's "Stepping Out Secret's
Program". Some specific questions I have are:

1.- Does anyone really use 10-20 different types of brushes?2.- Is
Dermablend really the best foundation to cover the beard area?3.- Is eye
makeup dangerous to people with eye problems? (such as a cornea
transplant)

Any advice regarding these questions and a million or so others I haven't
asked would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, this forum here is indeed the correct place to ask such questions. Ask for advice and you will receive it, in abundance!

If you're starting out from scratch learning how to do a basic face, practicing is the best thing to do. It's the only way you'll become comfortable and proficient with it.

Some do, most don't.

2.- Is Dermablend really the best foundation to cover the beard area?

Dermablend is considered the gold standard for beard coverage. There are other similar products, but whenever the topic of beard coverage comes up, Dermablend is the one to which all other solutions are compared.

One thing I will strongly suggest is that if you're a beginner, you do NOT try such things as the "cheap red lipstick" trick until you're comfortable with such things as color correction. One issue is that it can look just fine under one kind of light, but hideous under others.

As long as you don't actually get it in your eye, probably not. I'm not a MD, so my advice on this topic is strictly peer to peer here. I do know that sharing eye makeup and tools (brushes, eye pencils, etc.) with others is a common way to spread infections and result in conjunctivitis, which you definitely don't want!

If you have any other specific questions, please ask.

Let me go a bit further here. I'm gonna recommend a book for you. (Books, those things we used to read before the web.) A book titled _Making_Faces_ by the late Kevin Aucoin. Most any library or bookstore should have it. It's the standard reference for both stage and street makeup. It even covers some cross-gender topics.

During DLV there will be many opportunities to visit various firms which specialize in cosmetics and are TG-Friendly, both TG-specific specialty shops and "civilian" shops which value our business.

Thanks Annie, for sharing your knowledge. I just ordered "Making Faces"
from Amazon for $12.93. At the same time, I noticed ""Bobbi Brown Makeup
Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro" which looked interesting, so
I bought it too.

My $.03 here.

First, the best thing I ever did was to buy a 5x lighted makeup mirror. If your middle age or older you can't see close enough to put on your eye makeup. Ever try putting on eye makeup with glasses on.

Biggest mistake I made at my first couple of times out was to go real heavy on eyeliner and lipliner. Forget the liquid eyeliner. Takes forever to learn to use and far to bold.

And, Annie, sorry to asking this here but I don't know where else. Is there anyway I can get a password I can remember. I reset it a thousand times and it gives me impossible to remember passwords.

In my not so humble opinion, the "ring around the lips" look is one of the worst there is! It looks theatrical and is most definitely unflattering. It may be appropriate for stage, where the facial features need to be visible from the last row of the third balcony, but for a day look, it's just not what you want.

Yes, I know that a few of the popular MUAs will do this unless told to do otherwise!

I don't think I can risk eyeliner anyway, given the condition of my eyes. (corneal transplant in one) As for lipliner: All the videos I've watched show that you must first outline the lips with lipliner, then just fill in between the lines with lipstick. If you don't use lipliner, then do you just fill in between imaginary lines, or what is the trick to getting it on right?

Sweetie, You hit the nail on the head there. I never liked seeing the ring
around someone's lips. Makes me sick and especially don't want it for myself

Originally it was to be the same color as the lipstick so the edge would
be more pronounced.

Since we are on pet peeves what is this thing about men not shaving.
It;s on TV and everywhere you go. I think men are trying to show their
not gay. Let me tell you guys, If you have to show that your not gay.
Your Gay for sure. I like a man that is clean shaving and well groomed
with a suit and tie on. Anything less he better be playing tennis or
some kind of sport and be dressed the part.

Lip liner is a trick usually utilized, but NOT ALWAYS, used by drag
queens to emphasize and add drama to the lips. I've seen some women pull
it off quite well, though.
