Epilator

A device called an epilator recently came to my attention. It looks like
an effective way to remove body hair, but I am wondering if anyone has
used an epiator to remove facial whiskers. I hate my beard and body
hair. If an epilator could be use on the face, it would be a good
alternative to electroylis or laser removal. I can stand the pain. Does
anyone have a brand and model to suggest?

They don't work at all on facial hair, if it is the spring based one
that I'm thinking of, my wife calls them medieval torture devices....

I bought a TRIA Personal Laser hair remover www.triabeauty.com and it
has worked wonders on my facial hair and chest hair. It takes some
persistence but it works on about 80-90% of my whisker fur. Closer to
100% on the chest fur, and seems to last pretty well.

Just my humble opinion.

I have talked with people who have tried an epilator on their face.
First they say that there is no pain like the pain of epilating or
waxing your face. Also, the ingrown hairs you end up with will make you
look like you are going through puberty again.

An electrolysis technician said that if you epilate or wax your face,
you will distort the follicles which makes electrolysis more difficult.
Since you pay for an electrolysis technician by how many hairs per hour
they can do, slowing them down isn't good.

I know (LOL, not by personal experience) that the Epilady (brand) did not have the power to remove the male beard.

I might suggest Zip Wax instead of a mechanical epilator. You should be able to find this at any well-stocked drug store and if applied thick, yes, it should be able to remove any kind of thick facial hair.

Be careful what you ask for.

Seriously, some have used a preparation called EMLA (prescription in the US, supposedly OTC in Mexico) prior to epilating with a profound reduction in pain.

As an aside, over a decade ago there was a used Epilady given away as a door prize at DLV. I lost track of who eventually ended up with it as it was passed from person to person before and after the door prize give-away, mostly amongst those from the old Pinkmyst chat group.

I've tried an Epilady twice now (on leg hair) and I must agree with those who say the Epilady was invented by the Gestapo as a means of inducing enemy prisoners to talk.

I wouldn't recommend using it on your face. It doesn't stop hair growth.
It will be very painful. Hair will likely come back thicker which will
make the appearance of large pores. Yuck! Ingrown hairs are a pain.

I would only use one for chest, arms, legs and back.

Since we are talking of hair pulling epilators - Has anyone tried the
infomerical ones I currently see on TV?

Both use similar technology to kill the follicle for permanent hair
removal - and supposed to be painless and its safe under the arms,
bikini line, etc. I heard that both are safe to use on the face and
sensitive private areas.

Both require re-treatment schedules that will eventually remove all the
hair in the selected areas.

I have strong hair on my legs - tried chemical creams like Nair. It
doesn't completely remove the hair in one session. Wait longer than the
instructed time period or doing another session immediately after can
burn the skin making it very red and easy to create a rash, and still
not remove all the hair. Its also easy to miss areas your eyes cannot
see like the back of the hips and buttocks. It leaves a strong chemical
smell in the shower and tub. The hair that is removed can clog the
drain in the tub too.

I've tried using shaving foam and a straight edge razor - both mens and
womens, single and double or more blades. It works well, but again -
have to worry about cuts and also burns caused by the razor cutting too
much skin. I even moisturized the skin after the shave.

I've also tried to do micro-scrub or salt scrub or some exfoliation to
open the clogged pores after shaving to prevent the ingrown hairs and
itch and scratching that always follows shaving or chemical removals.
It worked some of the time. Hair grows in phases, and not all at the
same time.

Both methods don't stop hair growth that happens within a few days. Its
either re-treatment that can cause more skin irritation. Also the
clogged follicles can cause itching and more skin irritation leaving the
skin red and raw and scratching that ruins any nicely shaved legs.

Women who have been doing this since their teens - by the time they are
in their 20s most have no hair left on their legs and arms - the
follicles have stopped growing hair because of the constant removal like
waxing or by other permanent removal treatments.

The one method I am using now is a electric shaver. It faster than
blade or chemical removal methods and can do a whole body with two
complete recharges. One can do this in the tub or above the toilet - if
its a electric shaver - be careful about being close to water. It has
a face plate that tries to block removing too much skin to reduce the
skin burn. It still doesn't stop the regrowth of hair in a few days -
but its easier to remove the stubble and less skin burn. There are
waterproof models that can be used while wet in the shower.

There are also battery powered portable models. These battery ones are
small and good to keep in the purse for afternoon shadow issues.

Waxing I found lasts longest before the dreaded hair to return. It can
be done by a Spa by yourself with kits - another one is Nads that pulls
the hair out - I haven't tried it either. Watching a episode of 10,000
ways to die, and a supposed woman went in for wax hair removal ended up
with her pubic hair set on fire and then died in a rare condition with
water when the building fire sprinklers were set off. It has kept me
from getting waxed. I've also seen the process on YouTube. Its rather
painful more so if the hair is long or the skin is not accustomed to
having the hair pulled out - and at times some skin may go with the hair

I tried so many things over the years. I had a very thick beard and
finally using a combination of electrolysis, laser,hormones and a skin
care routine has it gone (mostly) away.

I used to have to shave 2 times a day when I was living as a guy.

The reviews I have read is that it is not worth the $300.00 they charge,
in addition if you change your mind getting your 300 back is a
challenge.
