Only 24 days left, gang!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity headcounts:
Everybody who registered for DLV 2002 prior to this Saturday evening,
April 6, should have received a mailing with a clickable link to a
headcount screen. (Some of you may have received two copies of this
due to a slight glitch.)
IF YOU REGISTERED PRIOR TO THIS SATURDAY EVENING AND DID NOT RECEIVE
THIS, PLEASE LET US KNOW! (Just reply to this mailing and state you have
not received it.)
Those who registered on or after Saturday evening will receive this
within a few days after they register.
We're asking everybody to please fill out this headcount screen as soon
as possible.
You can always change your mind at any time and fill out the screen
again. If you're not interested any of the listed activities, please
fill out the screen indicating 'No' to all, as this is used to reconfirm
your DLV registration.
Thanks to everybody who responded. Responses started coming in literally
within seconds of when the mailing went out.
We should note that the air tours, makeup demo, and swimming party are
now full. Sign-ups for these are now being placed on a waiting list.
Limo tour is full, but those waiting may be able to get in on this
if there are enough people on the waiting list to fill an additional
vehicle. We probably will not know this for sure until the week of DLV.
Don't get discouraged if that special thing you wanted to do is showing
full. We will be getting some cancellations, so get your name on the
list(s). Waiting lists are currently very short, so there's a very good
chance everybody who signed up to do something will indeed get to do it.

Slumber Party expanded:
I was just informed that a second suite has been added for the Wednesday
evening slumber party. This was full with a waiting list last night,
but is now just slightly more than half full.
Please join me in thanking LeeAnna and Cindy (in unison, "thanks LeeAnna
and Cindy") for making this very popular activity happen.

Sahara Sold Out DLV Weekend:
The Sahara Hotel is no longer taking reservations for Friday, May 3 and
Saturday May 4. We have seen this coming for some time now. Resellers
and aggregators *MAY* still have rooms at the Sahara to sell, but it
looks like a full house there over the DLV weekend.
As of yesterday, Hotel Discounts (www.hoteldiscounts.com) still had
Sahara rooms available over all of the DLV period for $55/109, but these
will probably be gone soon.
Boardwalk and Imperial Palace (our other two suggested hotels) still
have rooms available as of this writing.
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ANY LONGER if you have not made your hotel
reservations yet. Prices are rising and space is getting tight.

Actually, I was curious about this, so I did a little homework. Back in
1999, DLV was supposed to start on a Friday, but it turned out that a
number of people were gonna be in on Thursday and wanted to get
together. Looking back in the list archives, some people wanted to go
to Keys, other to Gypsy {sic} so we kinda compromised on Goodtimes for
what was then a true Pre-DLV get-together. The tradition and the name
stuck.
The first mention I can find of the Pre-DLV thing is at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/arc99/0019.html which was April 28, 1999.
It's discussed a bit more in:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/arc99/0017.html which is dated May 5.
Say, Tina, weren't we supposed to write up something on the history and
lore of DLV? :)

Sahara Players Club rates:
>I am interested in the section in the mailing about the Sahara Players
>Club that talked about savings at the sahara. How does that work?
Most of the casino-hotels have a players club. Gaming action is tracked
and those whose action is at certain levels are rewarded with various
things, such as discounted rooms, free meals, logo merchandise, etc.
Most casinos use the players clubs to track mid to low rollers, the
high rollers or "whales" being tracked separately. Some track machine
games only through the players club, others track table action as well.
Some properties have very clear and open standards as to what is
required for certain comps, such as xxx points on machines or xx hours
at xx average bet on tables for a free room. Others seem to keep the
standards quiet and arbitrary.
Some properties will give "casino rate" on rooms just for being a member
of the club. Most, however, wanna see action.
>I already have my reservations at the sahara, will that card lower my
>rates?
I doubt if they will give you a reduced rate until you have established
some level of playing history.
What I suggest you do is to sign up for the players club when you check
in. Toward the end of your stay, assuming you have used your card when
you play at the tables and machines, is to ask a casino host if your
level of play qualifies you for a reduced rate, and ask if you can have
your hotel rate adjusted at checkout.

Yes, he will be doing a special dinner show for us. We have quite a
crowd signed up for Friday dinner already. It's gonna be a goodie!

Actually, that may be one of the only way to get Sahara rooms for the
weekend now, going through a reseller, that is.

Rental Car:
A couple items on a related topic ...

... and ...

>special interest outside the group activities.
>Is a rental car practical in Las Vegas?
Yes
>Are there insurmountable parking problems?
No
>My first thought that a car is impractible and parking impossible.
The big advantage to a car is convenient and (yes) economical transportaion
when you want it, where you want it.
There will be only a few cases where parking will be a challenge. The
nightclub area known as the Triangle District has limited parking on
Friday and Saturday late at night. Parking may be tricky at the Riviera
for the Saturday evening show, but not impossible.
Your big problem will not be parking but congestion. Las Vegas has
thousands of tourista types who don't know the area well and therefore
stick to a few well-known routes, which become overloaded at many times.

Hotels:
>I am now on your mailing list for the las vegas event. I am still
>unclear as to the hotel situation. Does the event centre on one hotel?
No. There is no central location for our activities. The activities
occur at various (mostly non-hotel) locations around town. We're quite
different from most of the other t* community events that are indeed
centered around one hotel and its facilities.
>Is the a best hotel where everyone is staying? Please let me know.
We're suggesting three hotels for our people, the Boardwalk, Imperial
Palace, and Sahara. As of this time, the Sahara has the largest number
of our people with the Imperial Palace a close second.
As of early this week the Sahara was showing sold out for Friday and
Saturday May 3-4. Both Boardwalk and Imperial Palace still had rooms
for the entire DLV period at last check.
And speaking of our activities, if you are the first person to print
out this mailing, yep, this one right here, make a paper airplane out
of it, and sail it at Annie at our Pre-DLV get-together on Tuesday,
April 30, you will be entitled to the drink of your choice.

There are still some good deals out there, but they are disappearing
fast. Some resellers still have Sahara rooms available, and others
such as Palace Station and Arizona Charlie's still have rooms at decent
rates for the DLV period.
