These are some of my personal notes and comments regarding
the 2010 survey. I'm not going to comment on all of the
answers, just those I think are significant.

Overall, this was a very highly-rated event this year,
the highest-rated I can remember! All of the activity
coordinators deserve an overwhelming round of applause
this year, for a very successful and highly-enjoyed
event!

There's really not that much on the objective part of the
survey that I find disturbing or discouraging. Of course I
would like to see all "derogs" be zero, but there's really
nothing derogatory of any significance here, just a few
low spots, some of which do need to be addressed, of
course.

Due to the irregularities reported, I had to rewrite much
of this from scratch. However, when the tabulation was
re-run, most of the results came out slightly more positive
than on the original run.

Thanks again to all who volunteered, all who attended, and
all who gave us this highly-valuable feedback. :)
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's discuss ...

+How many times have you attended Diva Las Vegas?

+Once: 32
+Twice: 14
+3 or more: 58

As has been the case in recent years, the responses to the
survey are fairly heavily tilted toward multi-year returnees.

However, it should also be noted that with 32 newcomer
responses, a very high percentage of the 2010 newcomers
did participate in the survey this year, for a reasonable
representation of both returnees and newcomers.
. . . . .

+About how far did you travel to attend DLV 2010?

+Approximate average miles: 1803.80

Virtually unchanged from last year's 1779.88.
. . . . .

+On what date did you arrive for DLV 2010?

+Before Sunday, April 18: 49
+Sunday, April 18: 30
+Monday, May 11: 7
+Tuesday, May 12: 8
+Wednesday, May 13: 6
+Thursday, May 14: 3
+Friday, May 15: 2

For 2010, we saw somewhat of a decrease in mid-week arrivals.
. . . . .

+On what date did you depart DLV 2010?

+Sunday, April 18: 4
+Monday, April 19: 0
+Tuesday, April 20: 1
+Wednesday, April 21: 7
+Thursday, April 22: 5
+Friday, April 23: 13
+After Friday, April 23: 74

One significant difference for 2010 is that we had far less
of a next-to-last-day and last-day-daytime exodus than we
have seen in recent years. I really believe that our strong
ending this year is a result of our Sunday-Friday dates. We
ended on a high point, rather than on a downhill slide.

+Approximate average length of stay: 5.17 days.

Virtually unchanged from recent years.
. . . . .

+Approximate average age: 56.68

Again, very consistent over the last several years.
. . . . .

+I consider myself to be primarily a (an) ...

+Crossdresser: 45
+Transvestite: 3
+Pre-op transsexual: 11
+Post-op transsexual: 4
+No-op transsexual: 5
+Transgender(ist): 24
+Drag queen: 1
+Significant other: 4
+Admirer: 1
+Friend of the community: 4
+Friend of another attendee: 1
+I do not identify with any of the above labels: 3

The only discernable trend over the past few years has been
the decrease in those having "Transvestite" as a self-identity.

It should be noted that no label of self-identity constitutes
a majority of DLV attendees.

One point of confusion, perhaps a misunderstanding, is the
fact that for the survey, we don't try to define these, only
track what our attendees report.
. . . . .

+Do you belong to a local transgender support group?

+I am currently a member.: 44
+I have previously been a member.: 24
+I have never been a member.: 35

Somewhat of an increase in reported group membership. 42%
report current group membership, compared to 34% in 2009.
. . . . .

Some interesting results here ...

+Have you ever attended any of the following transgender
+community events? (Weighted relative responses for each
+event.)

+Southern Comfort Conference 29
+Be-All 24
+Holiday Enfemme 16
+Esprit 14
+Fantasia Fair 14
+Colorado Goldrush 11
+Fall Harvest 9
+First Event 8
+California Dreaming 7
+Paradise in the Poconos 5
+Dignity Cruise 4
+Pinkfest 4
+Texas T 4
+En Femme Getaway 0

Be-All shows a significant increase, eclipsing HEF in the
numbers. Increase in reported Fall Harvest participation
this year, although the event is all but defunct.

DLV is well-represented at most of the other events.

No EFG people this year, huh?

However, the majority of the respondees, 63 out of 104 or
60%, do not report attending any other events. This is up
slightly from 2009. We're most definitely attracting a
"non-convention" crowd. :)
. . . . .

Hotels, satisfaction:

Although the numbers in most samples are low, the responses we
received (and inversely, the number of responses) do appear to
track the price range of the hotels:

+Paris: ($$$$) Definitely satisfied: 3 (none lower)

+Harrahs: ($$$) Definitely: 3, Mostly: 1

+Imperial Palace: ($$) Definitely: 3, Mostly: 2, Neutral: 2

+Sahara: ($) Definitely: 7 Mostly: 13, Neutral: 5,
+Not really: 1, Definitely not: 2

Similar tracking was observed in the comfort category.

22 other hotels were reported this year. Far more than we've
ever seen before on the survey.

+Did not stay in a local hotel: 20

About 20% of the DLV attendees are local, and this number
has been quite consistent over the years, beginning back
in 1997. :)
. . . . .

I consider this next section to be the most important part
of the yearly survey. This quantifies how much our attendees
enjoyed the various activities which make up DLV as a whole.

It also identifies areas where improvement is needed, however
for 2010, it almost does not apply. :)

I consider anything over 4.5, particularly when many responses
have been counted, to be about as close to perfect as you can
get. This means that more of the respondees checked "enjoyed
significantly" than all other choices combined.

Anything over 4 is very good. To get 4.0 or higher, the
number of "enjoyed significantly" responses must exceed
all of the neutral or lower responses combined.

I consider any rating with 10 or more responses to be most
definitely valid and anything with 5 or more responses to be
mostly valid. Those with less than 5 responses are valid from
the perspective of those who made those responses, but there
are not enough samples to form an authoritative conclusion.

+What was your level of enjoyment at each of the following
+activities?

We tracked 68 activities this year! (68 - count 'em - 68).
65 of them were rated on the survey. This compares to 52
activities for DLV 2009.

This year's enjoyment ratings are very high, the highest
overall that I can remember of any DLV year.

The original numbers posted were "contaminated" to a slight
degree by one invalid survey response. The most obvous
effect of this was that originally, none of the activities
we tracked attained a perfect 5.0 score in either enjoyment
or comfort. This also caused the activities which scored
above 4.0 to be rated slightly lower and those which scored
below 4.0 to get a slight bump. A quick check of all of the
other responses revealed no obvious additional issues.

On the final tabulation, 9 of the activities scored a perfect
5.0 on the enjoyment scale! This is the most 5.0 scores we've
ever had! 45 of the activities, or 85% of them, scored 4.5 or
over! 59 of the activities scored 4.0 or higher! This is an
absolutely phenomenal "report card" for this year's event!

There were no "losers" this year. Nothing scored less than
3.0 for enjoyment. In other words, nothing we had this year
was disliked by the majority of those attending!

Thanks again to the activity coordinators for putting on such
a well-received slate of activities, and thanks to all who
attended and those who took the survey for making DLV 2010
the success it was!

The top-scoring activities were:

+Makeover Tips Bare Escentuals, Monday: 5.0 (10 responses) >>DING!<<

+Eating Out Night Joe's option, Tuesday: 3.35 (17 responses)
+Beginner Open House Session 1, Monday: 3.0 (8 responses)
+Fashion Show Lunch, Friday: 3.0 (1 responses)

This was a very highly-enjoyed event!

Of particular note this year was the Hotel Hostess Program,
and you'll note that all of the daily hotel get-togethers
did very well WRT enjoyment scores.
. . . . .

+What was your comfort level at each of the following
+activities?

The comfort ratings this year were so high and clustered
so tightly that it's really not worth going over most
of them.

Only three came in lower than 4.0. Two of them had very low
numbers of responses, so I'm not too concerned here.
. . . . .

+Did you find yourself missing DLV activities because you
+either got into a time crunch or were simply too tired from
+previous activites?

+Seldom or never: 45
+Occasionally: 48
+Frequently: 11

"Occasionally" is up sharply this year. "Frequently" is
up slightly.

One issue, actually two, which have been reported since the
early years of DLV are that attendees do not realize the
intensity of DLV until they experience it, and returnees
are also overwhelmed to an extent. Activities and the
after-activities often continue into the wee hours of the
morning and even early daylight hours. Many who are of
middle age are not used to this and fatigue sets in.

In our schedule, there's really no "slack time", and the
activities often occur bang-bang-bang from daytime into
evening into night into the early morning.

A related issue is that many of our attendees are not used
to living in girlmode for days at a time or even for a
full day. They often do not realize the time requirements
for daily get-ready and the afternoon/evening freshen-up
sessions or in many cases a complete re-do.

One other time crunch issue which I believe is significant
is that attendees, even returnees, frequently underestimate
the actual amount of get-there time, from walking out of
the hotel room to actually arriving at the activity. Things
like waiting for the elevator, walking to the parking garage
or taxi stand, waiting on line for a taxi, fighting traffic,
or watching the taxi meter click as the drive fights traffic.
Picking up others, and that cumulative chain-reaction if
those who are being picked up are running late, etc.

With 57% of the respondees reporting at least occasional
time crunches, this issue is of some significance to our
event.
. . . . .

+What was your primary means of transportation to and from
+DLV activities?

+My own private vehicle: 54
+My own rental vehicle: 18
+In another's vehicle: 14
+Taxi: 8
+City bus or shuttle: 4
+Walking: 3

Taxi down slightly. Bus and walking up slightly. Others in
line with previous years.
. . . . .
This next question is of particular note this year, since
we discontinued our ride share coordination. The results
are in line with those of recent years, indicating that
there was no significant adverse impact.

+Did you have any difficulty getting a ride to DLV activities?

+Yes: 5
+No: 93

With the number of "yes" answers down in the single digits
over the past few years, it's hard to tell if there's really
any trend, and if the elimination of the "Ride Share Program"
had any effect. This year we had 5.1% of the respondees
report at least some difficulty, compared to 3.8% in 2009 and
5% in 2008, but the "yes" responses are so close to the "noise
floor" that I have to say this is inconclusive.
. . . . .

+Did you have any difficulty finding the locations at which
+DLV 2010 activities were held?

+Yes: 15
+No: 87

Up somewhat from last year. This year, I admit that I had
to answer "yes" on this, not only for one, but for three
activities. I had to hunt for Bare Escentuals in the mall
and was almost fashionably late, I had to ask a bartender
at a nearby bar where the Beauty Bar was (I thought it was
right on the corner of Fremont and LVB) and I led JoAnn
and Vivian on a wild goose chase looking for Power Exchange,
even though I proudly boasted that I knew exactly where
Highland was! That was a true "you can't get there from
here" scenario! Oh well ... :)
. . . . .

+Did you find the online maps to be helpful?

+Yes: 64
+No: 1
+I don't need a map: 28
+What maps?: 9

The "I don't need a map" answer was a suggestion which did
show a significant number of responses.
. . . . .

+Did you have any difficulty contacting DLV volunteers
+by phone?

+Yes: 4
+No: 27
+I did not attempt to phone.: 65
+I never received any phone numbers.: 5

Up on both the "difficulty" and the "clueless" responses
this year. (Hint: If you did not receive phone numbers,
you did not read the Large Final Mailing. Use it, Rosie,
that's what it's there for!) :)

I was one of the listed contact people this year, and I
must admit that there were times when I either did not
hear or slept through the ringing phone. :(
. . . . .

+Did you find the other DLV attendees to be friendly and
+inclusive?

+Mostly yes: 87
+Yes, somewhat: 11
+Neutral: 4
+No, somewhat: 2
+Mostly no: 0

This says a lot about our attendee base as a whole.

Overwhelming majority reports mostly friendly and inclusive,
and that's what we want to see.

As long as we keep the "derogs" in the zeroes and low single
digits, we're in good shape on questions like this.

However, for those who perceived otherwise, we do need to
take note and see if we can improve.

I would like to hear some explicit feedback from those who
felt otherwise, however. I want to see *EVERYONE* included
and if some go away with the perception that our group is
in any way cliquish or unfriendly, I want to hear what is
going on and at least try to do something about it.
. . . . .

+Did you participate in the DLV Discussion Forum on the web
+or the associated mailing list?

+Yes, via e-mail: 27
+Yes, via Yahoo: 9
+Yes, via the web: 21
+No: 41
+I don't know what you are talking about.: 5

Over the past several years this has crept upward and now we
have a majority who do participate, to one degree or another,
using one of the methods.
. . . . .

+In general, were you comfortable being seen with the DLV
+group in general public settings?

+Comfortable most or all of the time.: 79
+Mostly comfortable, but sometimes uncomfortable.: 19
+Frequently uncomfortable.: 7

Significant increase in the "Frequently uncomfortable"
answers over 2009.
. . . . .

Asking or receiving unsolicited advice: No observed trend
from last year's answers.
. . . . .

+Did you participate in any of those "other" activities?

+Yes, and I skipped DLV activities I had signed up for to do so.: 4
+Yes, but I had not signed up for DLV activities those times.: 12
+No: 69
+I don't know what you are talking about.: 17

In proportion to last year. As long as that first answer
stays in the low single digits, I think we're doing fine.

(LOL! This is one question where the "clueless" answer is
desired!) :) :)
. . . . .

+Did you participate in our Big Sister program and if so, did
+you find it to be helpful?

+I had a Big Sister and I found the program to be helpful.: 6
+I had a Big Sister and I did not find the program to be helpful.: 0
+I was a volunteer Big Sister and had a positive experience.: 5
+I was a volunteer Big Sister and my Little Sister was a no-show.: 3
+I was a volunteer Big Sister and did not have a positive experience.: 0
+I did not participate in the Big Sister program.: 87
+I was unaware the Big Sister program existed.: 1

Our Big Sister program is one of our shining stars! This year's
survey affirms this. No-show LS's will continue to happen and
it's something we'll have to accept.

Big Thanks to those who acted as Big Sisters this year! Again,
thanks to Nora for coordinating the Big Sister program. :)
. . . . .

+Did you participate in our roommate matching program?

+Yes, and I had a positive experience.: 0
+Yes, and I had a negative experience.: 1
+No, I did not participate.: 98
+I was unaware of any roommate matching process.: 4

I'm not going to read too much into this one. Over the past
two years, the demand for roommates has been very low, due
to the rock-bottom hotel rates that we've seen lately.

However, as the economy continues to improve, I suspect the
demand for roommates will rise. The amount reportedly spent
on accommodations (below) shows a trend of increasing cost
for lodging, and I'm sure that will continue for next year.
. . . . .

For the questions involving money, almost all of them showed
a very consistent 10% increase over last year with one major
exception, that being accommodations, which showed a 15%
increase over 2009. This pushed the total to an increase of
about 13%.

An additional item which was suggested in feedback was to
track the amount spent on local transportation, citing the
cost of a rental car as one of the more significant costs
of attending DLV. We'll include that on next year's survey.

+In general, did you consider DLV 2010 to be reasonable and
+affordable?

+Yes, definitely: 80
+Yes, somewhat: 19
+Neutral: 3
+No, somewhat: 0
+No, definitely: 0

It's really splitting hairs to try to envision any trend in
these answers.

80, 19, 3, 0, 0 this year compared to 63, 18, 2, 1, 1 last
year. This is, as I've stated before, a self-regulating
question. Those who don't believe they can afford DLV will
not attend.
. . . . .

Which best indicates what DLV is to you?

An opportunity to ...

Nothing earthshaking compared to last year.
. . . . .

+Which best indicates your feelings toward our level of
+attention to and enforcement of behavior, dress, and
+restroom guidelines?

+I support a higher level of enforcement.: 16
+I support the current level of enforcement.: 72
+I don't like it, but I understand why it has to be.: 15
+It's a bunch of bullsh*t, knock it off!: 2

The "higher level" answer was a suggestion received just
before we rolled out the survey this year.

To examine any trend, we need to look closely at the answers
received both this year and last.

If we interpret last year's "support the current level" to
mean that they support the current level OR a higher level,
the percentage agrees with the combined "current" and "higher"
answers this year, as in 82% last year and 84% this year.

Last year we had roughly 4% of the respondees indicate the
"bull$#!+" response, compared to only 2% this year. It may
be inferred as a trend, but the number of responses in the
"bull$#!+" category are so low that it's really difficult
to say anything conclusive.

The bottom line, however, is that the vast majority of our
attendees support enforcement of our Behavior, Dress, and
Restroom guidelines.

The comments received tend to support a higher level of
enforcement, and this is one topic which will be brought
up to the ORG group.
. . . . .

+Would you prefer more activities be in mainstream venues,
+or more in discreet or secluded or alternative venues?

+I would prefer more secluded venues.: 9
+I would prefer more mainstream venues.: 22
+I think the balance was about right.: 75

The majority, by far, consistently answers that the balance
between mainstream and alternative venues is about right.

A significant minority, however, keeps calling for "more"
mainstream venues, and I can't help but interpret this as
a belief or feeling somewhere that the mainstream-ness of
DLV is somehow inadequate.

When this comes up, I always do a peg count as a sanity
check, counting the daily activities which were held in
mainstream versus alternative locations. Here's what I
came up with this year, and in cases where I thought it
could be argued that a venue was non-mainstream I put
it over to the alternative column.

Saturday mainstream: 1 Alternative: 0
Sunday mainstream: 9 Alternative: 3
Monday mainstream: 7 Alternative: 1
Tuesday mainstream: 10 Alternative: 5
Wednesday mainstream: 9 Alternative: 4
Thursday mainstream: 8 Alternative: 2
Friday mainstream: 8 Alternative: 0

If there's any shortage of mainstream activities, I sure
fail to see it. Even on the day (Tuesday) with the most
"alternative" activities, with one of them being close to
a coin-flip, the number of mainstream activities outnumbered
the number of alternative activities two to one.

+I would prefer more secluded venues.: 9

Yes, there are some who prefer more of an alternative slant
and as above, I really don't see that much of a shortage
of "safe" activities. We had a number of them this year,
many of them smaller, and we had some very well-attended
ones such as the Pity Party at Escape Lounge.
. . . . .

+Did you think DLV was too long or too short?

+It was too long: 8
+It was too short: 14
+It was just about right: 85

Again, the majority, the vast majority, think DLV is
right-sized, length wise.

A few do believe that it was too long. I really don't see
the logic here, as everyone is free to join us after the
start day or leave prior to the end day.

I really think the six-day timeframe is close to ideal,
and this year I think the Sunday start and the Friday end
worked very well.
. . . . .

+And what about the request to wear name tags?

+I found them to be helpful: 50
+I don't really care either way: 47
+I did not like them: 8

Slight increase in the percentage liking them, and a slight
corresponding decrease in the percentage disliking them.
. . . . .

+Did you personally have any public restroom issues while
+attending DLV 2010?

+I used public restrooms and YES I had issues or incidents.: 3
+I used public restrooms and did NOT have issues.: 72
+I seldom or never used public restrooms.: 18
+This question does not apply to me.: 11

+(2 answers discarded for inconsistency.)

The number reporting incidents is always low, but this is one
case where things can be devastating when they occur! :(

The textual reports cite several issues, some of which have
been discussed here, and this is one topic the ORG group
will be addressing.
. . . . .

+All in all, did DLV 2010 meet your expectations?

+DLV 2010 exceeded my expectations: 36
+DLV 2010 met my expectations: 62
+DLV 2010 failed to meet my expectations: 6

These numbers are what we want to see, but I'm still very
concerned about the 6 cases of failed expectations. I would
really like to hear some personal feedback from those who
answered "failed" on this one.
. . . . .

+Would you attend another DLV?

+Yes, definitely: 77
+Yes, probably: 25
+Maybe: 2
+Probably not: 1
+Definitely not: 0

Although the "maybe" and below reponses are typically down
in the single digits, we had a marked decrease in the "maybe"
answers for this year, 2, down from 9 in 2009. "Probably not"
decreased from 2 in 2009. I think this is another reflection
of the overall exceptional degree of enjoyment felt at this
year's event.
. . . . . . . . . .

Additional comments on any of this, gang? :)
