An idea for a possible DLV activity

Hi Ladies,

I was checking out the web site for the Las Vegas High Rollers Roller
Derby team and I sent them an email inquiring about a possible field
trip out to their training site some night during Diva and practicing
with the team on the banked track. This is just an inquiry, so don't you
all start to panic. If they say yes to the idea, I'm just curious as to
how many of you would take the challenge, strap on some skates, which
you'll probably have to provide, along with some elbow and knee pads and
a helmet, and go several laps around the track doing a little bumping
and blocking and skating for the fun of it.

For you residents of LV, if you're any good on the skates, and the
people in charge, like your skating, it might open up another possible
career for you, since they are recruiting skaters. I used to skate in
the roller derby back in the 70's in El Paso, Texas and it sure helped
me drop the pounds and become really fit. Never mind the sore muscles,
scrapes and bruises along the way. It was all worth it. And it was fun!
If this activity gets the green light, which I'm hoping it does, I could
be the contact person/coordinator and we ladies of DLV can form a team,
maybe call ourselves the Las Vegas Hot Divas. What a hoot! I'll let you
know if they respond to my inquiry.

Sounds like fun but at my age they have to put a walker on the
skates.....

I have done my share of stunt work but would LOVE such a trip.
If nothing else just to meet the skaters. I used to hang around
the NWWF (North West Wrestling Federation - Roddy Piper and
Johnny Eagles were stars way back then) and got to wrestle
with those guys a few times in my MUCH younger days (21-22
yrs old)

How about this, I'll watch. :)

I haven't done skates in years, decades, actually. I know I
would fall right on my @$$ !

No aspiration to being another Kansas City Bomber here. :)

Firing range sounds like fun but I am going to get laughed at. the only thi=
ng I use are single action .357s and they are only accurate if you throw th=
em at someone.

i would highly likely be in for this. (bless the spirit of annis jensen
and all the others....) i'd need to know what type of skates are
required (since i doubt if my metal-wheeled, clamp-onto-hardsoled- shoes
pair will do). would the protective gear be available, or be
provide-your-own? (not a problem if skateboard gear is acceptable.) this
possible event sounds really cool & i hope it can work out.

BTW: firing range this year? -- maggie's drawers.

I'm still waiting for a response from the Las Vegas Roller Derby team.
I'm sure your clamp-ons will not cut the cake for this activity. You'll
probably have to invest in a pair of shoe/boot type skates. From my
previous experience, they don't rent them out there at the training
site, as everyone is responsible for bringing their own. Protective gear
would probably be the same as for skateboarding, i.e. helmet, elbow,
knee pads. Keep your fingers crossed this activity gets the go ahead.

P.S. Long live Annis Jensen, Anne Calvello, Midge "Toughie" Brashun,
Joanie Weston (all my heroines).

Hi Rosada,

I think this is roller derby is good idea.
I've never skated so I will not be good at this.
These questions comes to mind about
skating ability and able to do this:

1. How to start and stop
2. How to maneuver in skates around the (makeshift) track
2a. How to move a high speeds in skates around the track
3. How to fall properly without injury
3a. How to deal with rink rash after one falls.
4. How to dodge obstacles
4a. How to dodge other players - rolling over someones fingers?
4b. How physical will this be with the other team
4c. Time to learn team techniques and strategies and practice
4d. How much can silicone boobs handle the physical
struggle affects of falling on them while moving, being
punched or elbowed, or would wearing a sock for
boobs be better.

For number 4, how physical are we going to
have to be... ie throw elbows, punches, pushes,
being tripped up? Possible bruises and black eyes
broken bones, concussions, torn ligaments?

Would we also need a team uniform? This is the
fun part... looking cool as a derby player!

I've seen teams with just t shirts, tank tops, mini skirts, catholic
school girl uniforms with very short skirts, tight boy or high
school girls athletic uniform shorts, mini skorts, fishnet stockings
or even stripped stockings

i found a good-condition right-size set of "roller derby" skates (white
- fem) on eBay for a reasonable price (much less than "new" ones). i
have knee-pads, elbow-pads, wrist-protectors (from skate-board) & a bike
helmet which ought to do. for the rest of the outfit, i should be able
to piece together something that looks like (at least a parody of) a
roller derby uniform. so for equipment, i seem to be all set. now to
learn to feel comfortable "on wheels." & maybe i should try to find a
DVD of "Kansas City Bomber" - i haven't seen it since the theatre
release : ) (better, of course, would be videos of "real" bouts --
doubtless to be found on-line somewhere.)

perhaps the golf-skate-target practice could somehow be combined with
the Formal Ending Event -- and carried out down the middle of the Strip
: > this could be great! (ri---ght)

hoping for a wonderful vacation, ...

Yes, there are Roller Derby videos, some vintage from the 50's and 60 thru the
70's, on You Tube. I see them all the time. There is also a Roller Derby
Foundation in New York that has an extensive video collection and copies of
games for sale. Proceeds go to the Roller Derby Skaters Retirement Fund/Home.
At least that is what I read. Glad to hear you're on board with the idea. You
sound as if you're ready to go. I'll see you there. Maybe by the time DLV
rolls around you'll be ready to do a match race with me!
