I understand why you need to be cautious about giving out event
locations but can you at least tell us which events will be in the
hotel and which will be elsewhere?

I think there may be a major misunderstanding here.

There's no "the hotel", our activities occur all over the Las
Vegas area and our attendees stay wherever they want.

We do suggest a number of hotels:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2009/2009hotels.html

However, we don't maintain a "headquarters" at any hotel, nor
do we concentrate our activities in any hotel.

If a particular activity happens to be in the hotel you're
staying, it's simply by coincidence. :)

Yes, very mistaken.

In fact, the Tropicana is one of those we are specifically
NOT recommending for DLV 2009 attendees. If you look on our
Big List:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/vendors/

.. You will see that is has the yellow light. (Translated:
Caution, you probably don't wanna stay there.)

Why?

For the past year or so, the Tropicana has been in a vicious
downward spiral of long-overdue deferred maintenance, declining
occupancy, layoffs, cutbacks, employee morale issues, leading
to declining occupancy, rinse, repeat.

The proverbial last straw was the recent closure of "Folies
Bergere", which was at the time the longest-running production
show in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas aficionados are following the Tropicana situation
closely, as the Tropicana is one of the remaining legacy Las
Vegas casino-hotels. It's an interesting but sad story. Google
a bit if you're interested.

But anyway, if you want something in more or less the same
price range as the Tropicana, we're suggesting the Imperial
Palace. IP is not the Waldorf by any means, but it's clean,
comfortable, and more stable than the Trop.

Thanks so much for the fast replies. I'm still confused on one thing. I
looked at your hotel list and I didn't see the Tropicana there. I could
swear that once I read that the Tropicana was your main hotel and some
events were held there. Am I mistaken?

Hi Phillis

I guess our communication is not very good because this question
suggests a very basic disconnect between what DLV is compared to other
TG conferences.

There is NOT A hotel. People can (and will) stay at what ever hotel they
choose to. We have a list of some hotels we know or believe to be
affordable, clean and reasonably TG friendly. But there is NO DLV hotel.
Many people stay in time shares, apartments, houses and non recommended
hotels etc.

Therefore, by definition, there are no activities in THE hotel. There
are activities scattered across a number of casino hotels throughout the
strip area including but not limited to Bellagio, Sahara, The Four
Seasons, Ceasars, Wynn, Mirage, Paris. You name a hotel and there is a
good chance there will be an activity there.

This is NOT a ring fenced or closeted TG conference or weekend away
somewhere. This is a vacation to Las Vegas that is enjoyed as everyone
else does, out and about among the teeming millions, or in the case of
the current recession teeming 100's!

There isn't even one hotel that is convenient to the majority of
activities, as these are literally all over the place.

You will see on the schedule that activity locations are classified as
mainstream, safe and something else. While we think all locations are
safe, the difference here is that the safe ones are going to be fairly
closed in nature, that is, we will pretty much be in the majority. The
mainstream activities, on the other hand, we will be in the minority. It
will be the real world...as much as Las Vegas ever represents the real
world!

Hugs
Michelle
