accommodations beyond the "recommended?"

does anyone have an opinion ready to offer (in general, & in
T-friendliness rating specifically) about The El Cortez H&C on
Fremont Street?

DLV '07 was my first time in LV & i stayed at The Sahara with no
problems except tuesday night (after NSD) when management decided to
change my room door "lock" & i had to go discuss the matter at the
check-in desk dressed like an absolute TART -- which didn't seem to
bother anyone at all. (my shameless mini-skirt felt very nice on me.)

The El Cortez SEEMS a charming & classic place i might ought to like,
but i'd appreciate hearing comments from any girls who may actually KNOW
something about TECH&C, before i book it, (dan-o). thanks for
assistance.

The El Cortez is alright I suppose. Don't know what the rooms are like
but they've done some revovation on the casino floor. It seems to me to
have a sanitized odor to it when you first walk in like they overdid the
bug spray but it goes away soon. I've eaten everywhere there, no buffet
and the coffee shop stinks in general unless you like canned wax beans.
Roberta's restaurant suprisingly is pretty good but pricy for that
joint.

What I don't like about it is the location. It's the last casino on
Fremont and sits alone. Consequently, there is always the usual cast of
downtown denizens hanging around to bum a smoke or a buck. If you need
to take the bus it's a fair walk to the bus stop amid the dredges.

The machines are old and there are only a few tables. It has a big Live
Keno parlor if you like that..... one of the last few in town. You
might be better suited to try the Four Queens or another one in the
middle of the action of Fremont St. Living here for 15 years I would
not recommend the El Cortez unless you have a car and can go straight to
the parking lot and stay off the streets. I don't know about the
T-friendliness factor, I used to stop in after work when I was employed
in the area but I imagine it's OK.

I have stayed there, but not since the late 1970s, not
to show my real age. :)

As I think back over the DLV years, I can't remember
anybody from DLV staying there ever.

Here's what CheapoVegas has to say about it:

+Built in the 40s and still looking "Old Vegas", this
+is one of the last bastions of classic. They've
+fancied the place up a lot, cleared the smoky air,
+added some marble, fresh carpet and chandeliers to
+discourage the nogoodniks from hanging around. It
+seems to have worked. And yet, we still keep coming
+back because it's so cool.

My only concern would be the area. It's right on the
edge of a really dicey part of town. I wouldn't recommend
it unless you have your own vehicle.

Hi Elise.

Absolutely not. Please Stay away from it and try
another place, this is in a Ratty part of town, you
would be risking life and limb staying down there.
"Especially when Dressed". (unless you can run faster
scared than they can mad). The rest of Freemont
street in the heart of the core is quite respectable
but The Cortez location is a smidge scary after dark.
If you are looking specifically at Downtown then
Freemont Street offers plenty of choices but if price
is your motivator there are other suitable places
closer to the strip and the DLV action.

I can not comment on how t-friendly they are but I can say that the El
Cortez is a great place to stay. Don't be afraid of the reviews you
might find online about the EC. It really is a grand old place with lots
of character. I stayed there for almost a week in February of 2007 and I
can honestly say that the room, staff and everything else about the
hotel was as good as the NY NY where I stayed at on the trip prior to
this past one. Even the televison had many times the number of channels
that the NY NY had.

To clarify I am not knocking the El Cortez, just the area and time of
year that DLV happens. Deety's trip in February would be less eventful
on the streets due to the homeless moving towards the shelters for the
winter months. DLV in late April when some of the shelters close until
winter brings them back to living on the streets in that area. That
area is 7th St. A few blocks down police have installed monitoring
cameras on the traffic lights to better police the area just to give you
an idea. Lots of drug traffic and low lifes all around.

I can't be more discouraging to anyone wanting to stay there during
Diva. I would be willing to guarantee that if you stood outside at
night for a few hours you would see at least 5 arrests or shakedowns in
that 3-4 block area. With so many other places available it might be
better to find somewhere else.
