Date timeframes being considered ...

Thanks to everybody who has provided input on this matter.

Here's a summary of what timeframes have been under discussion and which
one as of this time has been actually nominated and seconded as a
candidate for DLV 2006:

Nothing is a done deal yet, and we'll keep the DLV Discussion Forum
advised continuously, as well as make a general announcement to the
entire list before things are final.

Some of these are copied from a note I sent several hours ago to the
ORG group.

In general I'm not in favor of any timeframe prior to April nor after
May. I don't think there is any significant need to move DLV out of the
approximate vicinity on the calendar in which it's occured the past 9
years.

I'm also on the record against any timeframe that positively locks
out any of our active organizers or longtimers.

Let's go over the list of what's been discussed and a few variations
on those themes ...

April 2 - 8: Not gonna work, IMAO. Locks out one of our more active
organizers.
. . .

April 9 - 15: Just prior to Easter. Too many of our people have family
commitments during that week.
. . .

April 16 - 22: Starts on Easter. Not good, IMAO. Easter is both a sacred
and secular family holiday.
. . .

April 17 - 23 (Monday thru Sunday): We started DLV 2003 the day just
after Easter and heard not a peep (pun intended) about it. I think that
this timeframe is a definite possibility.

As of this time, this is the only timeframe that has been nominated and
seconded as a possibility. This seems to have some support as of this
time, but discussion is still in progress and will be for a while.

Your input and comments on this timeframe are welcome.
. . .

April 23 - 29: Original dates. IMAO, not gonna work. Not affordable for
many and major crowds will be present.

Although nothing says we can't re-nominate this timeframe, I believe
there is not a significant consensus as of this time to seriously
consider it as a final DLV 2006 timeframe.
. . .

April 30 - May 6: Not gonna work, IMAO. Locks out one of our more active
organizers and may be bad for another.
. . .

May 5 - 11 (Friday thru Thursday): Might work, but messy. Ends on a
Thursday, and I don't think that's what our people want.
. . .

May 7 - 13: Off limits. Mothers Day is the 14th. We are enjoined from
the 12th and 13th as well.
. . .

May 14 - 20: Off limits. Starts on Mothers Day.
. . .

May 15 - 21 (Monday thru Sunday): A definite possibility. Some may
gripe about beginning day after Mothers Day, but ...
. . .

May 21 - 27: Another definite possibility.
. . . . .

That's how things stand as of this day, hour, minute, and second.
Comments and feedback are appreciated.

Thanks, gang! :)

I just sent a note to the National Association of Broadcasters and told
them, in no uncertain terms, that they needed to move their convention
to a different date. We already had plans for that week and they
needed to reschedule. I mentioned that it was very inconsiderate to
flood Las Vegas during a time when we are planning to have an event
that is affordable for those of us who do vacations on a shoestring
rather than an expense account.

I did leave the door open for any of them who wanted to attend DLV to
come to L.V. during that time anyway and they would be welcome. They
just had to leave all their 134,500 friends at home.

Okay, they probably won't take me seriously either.

That being the case, I like the April 17-23 time frame as well.
Although it may cover some of the same time as some of the other
mentioned groups, I don't think they will be visiting too many of the
same locations we will. But then, we are looking to offer a few more
"tourist options" as part of the museum tours, so we may see them.
(There is nothing I'd like to see more than a group of college guys
arriving at the Chicken Ranch while we are visiting!)

I expect the weather to be somewhere between too rainy and cool and too
hot and windy during DLV. Regardless, it has been a success in all
weather conditions, just sometimes it's a little more pleasant a
success when the weather cooperates.

This the best for as I am going to NAB and combining the two events into
one for me will make it so much eaiser. The further apart they are the
harder it is for me. HOWEVER having them the same week I can understand
how bad it is as I have been to many NAB events in the past and I know
how many people are there.

Let me save you the trouble of reading the rest of the mail...

There's the religious thing...

>Palm Sunday is April 9 and Good Friday is the 15th. Although personally
>I'm not of the persuasion that celebrates these as high holy days, many
>of our attendees (and organizers) are.

----------------------------

...a few more from people who expect a group of a hundred people to make
accomodations for their personal situations...

-------------------------

>The week prior to Easter Sunday would work great for me -- I'm in
>college and two years ago I fought my university in a public forum
>(open meeting in front of the Regents) because they arbitrarily moved
>spring break away from Easter resulting in my combination of classes at
>Community College and University giving me separate spring breaks -- I
>couldn't leave town with either set of friends without ditching classes
>at one school or the other.

-----------------------

>We had already blocked out the current dates, and would ask please do
>not schedule the week of April 10 thru the 15th if it can be avoided.

------------------------

Then we have a few more like this one...

>Thoug I am not sure if I will be able to attend but please I have a
>desire to attend so let me know what the dates are and I am flexible on
>dates to either side of the original date.

...WHO REALLY DO WANT TO GO!

ROFL! I wonder how much discussion these guys had to go through to decide on a date.

Jessie,

I am with you. I would be at NAB anyway. It is a lot like
having DLV in the past before N+I.

April 17 to the 23rd I like.
