Jubilee show preferred seating:

On Thursday evening, April 24, we will attend the 7:30 presentation of
the "Jubilee" show at Bally's.

We have the opportunity to reserve, in advance, one or more of the large
booths that are up front and center, those that are normally reserved
for the casino's high rollers.

That's the good news. The bad news is that these have to be reserved and
pre-paid very shortly.

This is an option for those who want it. Those who don't want to pay
this far in advance will be able to purchase regular seats for Jubilee
at the activity sign-up time. (Activity sign-up will begin in March.)

Each seat will cost $75 which includes tax and nuisance fees. Seats are
sold in blocks of 8. It will be first-paid, first served. Money will be
refunded to those whose reservations do not fit into a complete block of
8 seats.

If you would like to reserve one or more preferred seats for this show,
send a note to: dlv@geekbabe.com and state that you are interested in
preferred seating for the Jubilee show. (You can simply reply to this
message if you like.)

You will then receive specific information and payment instructions.

If you are interested in this option, you must respond now, as we must
get this reservation in within the next week or so. These preferred
seats will not be available at activity sign-up time.

Shuttle van:

The DLV organizers have been discussing the possibility of a shuttle van,
professionally driven, as an option for local transportation to and from
our activities and our suggested hotels. Estimated cost would be a few
dollars per person each trip.

We need feedback to determine if we should look into this further. If
you are interested in this for your local transportation, please hit
REPLY and say so. This will happen only if there is significant interest
shown, so if you would like something like this, please say so.

Side trip to Area 51:

This is an optional activity, not part of the official DLV schedule, but
everybody attending is invited to participate.

This will happen Monday, April 21, and will visit "Little A-le-Inn",
"Area 51", and the famous "Black Mailbox", all near the town of Rachel,
Nv.

As Aiko proposed:

>We could have a mid-morning departure, lunch at A-Le-Inn, visit the
>Black Mailbox, drive the dirt road to Area 51 front gate, and a return
>to Vegas in the late afternoon - early evening.

>Cost would be the van rental and gas. I think it could be fairly
>inexpensive if we had 6 or 7 girls splitting the cost of a Caravan and
>gas.

Nobody has to decide now, but this is an advance notice so people who
want to attend can make their travel and hotel arrangements to allow
this. Sign-up for this will begin in March, along with other activities
that require an advance sign-up.

Dress code for this will be casual with comfortable shoes, boymode or
girlmode. Driving time to and from Las Vegas will be about 2.5 hours
each way with limited facilities along the way. Total trip time,
including lunch, stops at points of interest, etc., is estimated to
be 6-7 hours.

SO's items:

The very successful SO's gathering will be repeated this year, and
some input is requested regarding what is wanted, timing, etc.

Mindy writes:

>format.. as for the day.. any day would be fine for lunch.. if a happy

Also, as an extension of our Big Sister program, we will have a Big
Sister available for SO's as well. If any SO's would like to be put in
touch with a Big Sister, just write in and say so.

It's a production show at Bally's. You know, showgirls, jugglers,
showgirls, magicians, showgirls, animal acts, showgirls, the sinking of
the Titanic, showgirls, etc. :)

Just be there on Monday. :)

I'm not a local LV person, so if I'm wrong, please correct me....

When I first saw Jubilee, Bally's was the MGM Grand, and was also used
(at least the front of the building) in the James Bond Film 'Diamonds
are Forever' (Willard White's White House in LV).

MGM built another hotel/casino (the current one) shortly after they had
an unfortunate (and highly publicized by the news media) fire in the
building's top floors.

The show when I saw it was to celebrate the many years of MGM films and
favorite movie themes. When I saw the show, the advertisement for the
show was focused on the on-stage special effects, particularly the
destruction of the temple in the Samson and Delilah segment, and as
Annie mentioned, the sinking of the Titanic.

I'm also considering on seeing it again after several years to see how
it may or may not have changed. Its worthwhile show to see if one hasn't
seen it.

Bally's and MGM Grand and 007 information

Postby External Poster » Wed Jan 08, 2003 6:18 am

This posting is from: Julie Carter

Yvonne,

Just a little history about your "correct me if I'm wrong".

The 1971 Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever" was filmed mostly in the
downtown areas (the car chase) and the "Willard Whyte House" (outside
building scenes) were that of the Las Vegas Hilton.

The ground breaking for the MGM Grand started in April 1972 and opened
in December 1973.

In November of 1980, the MGM was adding a 782 room wing and rehearsing
for a new show that was to premiere in December - Donn Arden's $7
million extravaganza Jubliee. This show involved reenactments of
disasters, mythical and historical events. These included the
Hindenberg, Titanic, French Revolution and London Blitz.

On November 21, 1980, at approximately 7:17am, Las Vegas Fire
Department's Stations 8, 11, 12, and 21 received a call to respond to a
fire at the MGM Grand Hotel. Started by an electrical short, it is
estimated that during the first 90 seconds of the fire, 14 people were
killed. The fire crashed through the street level restaurant end of the
casino, going to the main entrance.

MGM closed after the fire and reopened on July 29, 1981. The first
guest to register a room on the 20th floor was Cary Grant, who strolled
through the resort greeting guests.

On July 30, 1981, the MGM Grand proved the old lady was back and doing
just fine by opening its $10 million Jubliee! in the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Bally's bought the MGM in 1986.

I hope this enlightened a few history buffs.

Bally's and MGM Grand and 007 information

Hi Julie!

I am now enlightened and thank you for your corrections! I was
trying to remember from the events back then, and was thinking I'm
probably not 100% acurate on the events back then, and I'm glad the
wrong facts have now been corrected! I wasn't trying to deceive anyone,
it was more like writing from a fuzzy memory.

Actually I was in intermediate when that 007 film was showing at
theaters, and saw Jubliee in either 82 or 83 (with a college group that
was a little past that age when gambling and drinking becomes legal),
when it was still called the MGM. I remember our group talking about the
fire as we went in to see the show.

Bally's and MGM Grand and 007 information

Hi Yvonne,

I'm kind of a "recent history" buff and thought you and the others
interested would find the MGM's history facinating. I would not in any
way try to contradict anyone or try to diminish the memories of Vegas
visits. I'm glad you had a chance to visit the original MGM with all
it's grandure. I'm sure those memories are special.

The MGM Grand was one of my favorite places, so all of the happenings
about the fire and MGM's history has held my ongoing interest. I, for
one, was very disappointed when Bally's bought it.. but that's Vegas.
Once I get a subject to "talk" about I just go from there.

I hope others with questions will bring them forward for disscussion.

See you at DLV 2003, at least on the golf course.
