Locking in a month/week (was Dates for Diva Las Vegas 2014)

Postby Gabriella » Sat Jul 20, 2013 11:15 am

This is Gabi from Vermont. I've not been able to attend because the dates keep being changed from year to year for Diva. I would highly suggest the voting members take a vote for example the 3rd week in April or something that folks who are often scheduled that far in advance can always plan for it. Or it starts the first (whatever the day) in (what ever the month). Just my thoughts. I attended in 2010 2011 and 2012. 2013 was not an option and 2014 won't be I'm fairly sure. Many years ago when running an annual church dinner we faced this problem. We decided the dinner would be the second Saturday in November. That was 29 years ago and the dinner still sells out each year. Folks began to depend on it.

This topic has been addressed many times over our history.

In the last go-round, nobody in favor of such a "lock" was able to name a calendar week between late March and early May which was guaranteed to be free of family conflicts (Easter, Holy Week, Passover) and high room rates (in particular due to the NAB Convention).

If anyone can show that any calendar week in our usual season will certainly never be affected by these issues, please name it.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Of course since I retired I'm pretty
flexible on any date DLV falls on.

Gabi, I hope that somehow you are able to attend in 2014. Regarding your
suggestion, one of the issues in designating a single timeframe each
year (ie - commencing the third Monday of April, or whatever) is that
not only does Easter & spring break dance around the calendar from year
to year but convention activity in Vegas varies as well. I believe these
things has made the designation of a set date from year to year a
non-starter.

Sara,

I see that can be a problem as Easter does move each year. With our
November dinner we scheduled it far enough from Thanksgiving that it
wouldn't interfere. The problem with Easter is that it can move up to a
whole month either way so I do see the issue.

I am going to try to make it. I do miss seeing everyone. FYI I've
changed my name legally and live full time. It is such a relief for
me.

I attended once - in 2008 (it's a long way from Australia). I had a
great time.

I happen to have booked time in Vegas for the second to last week in
April (commencing Easter Monday). I'm not sure about the constraints
faced by DLV organizers in relation to other events on in LV at the time
or any other factors (weather, holidays, spring break etc), however, it
would be great if the dates coincided with when I am there (not that
this should be a factor in determining the final schedule, of course).

Apart from National Association of Broadcasters conference (96,000!) for
7-10 April which looks like a barn filler and a half (although,
depending on your views, the chance to meet Oprah and/or Ellen (and
maybe Jack Donaghy - if he is still in the business) make this a
tempting time to be there), there do not seem to be any heavily
populated conventions on in town at that time (although I must admit at
other events I have been to, having other conferences on at the same
time/venue makes for "interesting (in a good sense) times":

Anyway, whatever the final date may be, I am sure that DLV 2014 will be
a success, and good times had by all.
