A few more specific survey comments ...

Postby annie » Wed May 29, 2013 6:48 am

Here are a few items which I think deserve some special attention, and for the most part these comments I'm making are said with the DLV organizer's hat on. :)
. . . . .

We put forth a lot of effort to be sure that all of the information necessary to effectively participate in DLV is made available, and if anything, there's more information than many attendees will need.

It concerns and saddens us when someone's enjoyment of our event is impared by attendees' lack of information. A "worst case" example this year is the lady who drove several hundred miles and was not able to make contact with the group.

Attendees do need to pay attention to such things as the Large Final Mailing. DLV is a unique event and it's close to impossible to fully participate without having this information.

A comment from the survey:

+ ... But, I found navigating thru old emails to find a link, then
+having to google DLV to locate other details to be confusing!

+What I would like to see is: A DLV page that has every possible thing
+linked FROM THERE!

+It would make it so much more easier to; organize my schedule, find the
+different events, dates, times, requirements, locations, etc., etc.
+Instead of jumping back and forth from your emails to the site as I had
+to do to put it all together. I'm obviously not a techie!

A registered attendee should never have to Google to find info on what's going on at DLV.

Everything that was mentioned here, and more, should appear on the web in the link sent out in the Large Final Mailing, all in one place.

Please take a look at this URL:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2013/lfmfinal/lfm.html

A personalized link to this was sent out just prior to DLV to all registered attendees. It has schedules, maps contact information, etc., and quite a bit of effort was put into producing and QA'ing it.

Are we missing something?

If something is missing that's important to know when attending DLV, we need to know about it.

If the person who wrote that comment is viewing this, I have a few questions:

Did the Large Final Mailing arrive as expected? Did the content display as expected?

Were you aware that the Large Final Mailing was being sent out?

Were you aware of what information was in the Large Final Mailing?

Please let us know, as we really need to prevent as many issues like this in the future.
. . . . . . . . . .

This next issue has been brought up multiple times over multiple years and I think it's important for all to understand just what the "rules" are and what the expected course of action is if you have an objection.

+Face masks should be an absolute No No! They are tasteless and silly.
+and draw unwanted attention to a group which does not need that kind of
+scrutiny. If I had been the hostess I would have insisted the person go
+home and put makeup on and act like an adult.

and

+someone needs to say something to the girl in the mask. This is not
+Halloween! We're the Transgender community and we're trying to gain
+acceptance and looking like a carnival side show act is not helping. I
+know no one wants to confront but there was a lot of talk about this
+and it's agreed that someone needs to say something.

Masks clearly fall under the category of costumes, which are not allowed, unless the Coordinator states otherwise, at our "mainstream" activities, meaning those activities which occur in venues open to and shared with the general public.

If it says "this is a mainstream activity" on the final schedule, costumes are not allowed unless the schedule notes on that actvity say otherwise.

At "safe venue" activities (alternative bars and such), there are no general prohibitions on costumes.

"Major Venue" (most larger and some mid-size activities) are somewhat of a grey area, but even these usually clearly fall into the mainstream or safe categories.

Now about "doing something", enforcement, and the like ...

There are no DLV standing rules that REQUIRE anyone (organizer, volunteer, etc.) to take action if an attendee's dress is out of compliance. Our people have made it perfectly clear that such things as a Sergeant At Arms or an Enforcement Committee are not wanted.

Under the current climate and culture of DLV, a motion to reqire that action be mandatory in cases of dress noncompliance would have a zero chance of carrying.

Therefore, it's primarily up to the Coordinator of any particular activity as to what action, if any, is to be taken, and by human nature, most Coordinators probably will not act unless there's a particular reason to do so.

We've been over this before, but for the record, here's what you need to do if another attendee's dress or behavior is impacting your enjoyment of an activity: Find the primary Coordinator of the activity. This is the only singular person, regardless of seniority or named leadership position, who has the authority to act in cases like this.

We do have a standing rule that does say that if a Coordinator declines to take action, the volunteers as a whole, and a quorum is six, can require an individual to change into an appropriate outfit. This has never been done in our history but it is possible.

The bottom line for this issue is twofold.

First of all, those who wish to present in a manner that's not "usual and customary" need to be aware that others may be annoyed by it and they do need consider others when selecting their outfit and mode of presentation.

As to "someone needs to say something ...", that "someone" needs to be one of those who feels that their enjoyment is being impacted, and it needs to occur in real time, when something can be done about it, as opposed to long after the fact on a survey.
. . . . .

+Don't go to studio kites [sic], why would you tour a place that
+didn't have any plus sizes and only had club wear - which is banned
+at every function?

I think we have two misunderstandings here.

First of all, clubwear, in and of itself, is not banned universally at DLV activities. For "safe venue" activities and others where a relaxed dress code is specified, clubwear is quite acceptable. Examples would be something like the Erotic Heritage Museum, an Alternative Bar Crawl, or at a place such as Drink And Drag. "Appropriate for the time, place, and circumstance of the activity" is the general guideline.

I also think that there's a misunderstanding about Studio Lites and for whom their clubwear is intended.

Their outerwear is not intended for the TG crowd. Their business model is unique and they do have a number of target customer groups, one of which is the TG community. Most of their outerwear is targeted at people such as dancers, showgirls, and yes "private entertainers" and such. :) Therefore they do tend to concentrate on the single-digit sizes for their outerwear.

Lines such as breast forms, wigs, foundations, accessories, etc., are indeed intended for their TG customers, as well as anyone else in need of those items.

**Attendees not connecting with the group**.

Maybe we should have a page of portrait pics in My DLV of the
coordinators if they are all ok with posting one.

A page of Single photos of the coordinator of events ( IE:-- pick a
portrait photo for ID purposes **One that really looks like you**
*lol*) We could update this page for the specific year and post it on My
DLV No Archives necessary! This might help new people to DLV to get
started and introduce themselves etc'. When I was new and didn't know
anyone, tying names to faces I had seen en masse in the DLV yearbooks
was a gargantuan task.

As long as we post something easy to recognize I think this might be a
decent idea.

This helps many have some "familar faces" to recognize when they come to
DLV.

We can do this as long as we get the majority of the activity Coordinators to consent to have their photos posted on the schedule and such.

I'll use the following image:

>> Masks

I understand that this freaks peoples out. My main comment here is who are we to judge? The transgender community has many subcultures - and many different ways of expressing oneself. Now I understand that this may not be appropriate for mainstream public events, but I would be very reluctant to call someone out on how they look. On the other, we should be more than willing to help other people with their clothing, makeup, etc it they want help.

>> Coordinator pictures

Still a great idea.

>> Getting information out.

I still find the final mailing and customizable schedule really useful. I usually end up bringing and passing out a few extra copies of the schedule because other people forget/lose it. In a related topic, I noticed that about a third of surveyed attendees did not use MyDLV at all. While I only started using it this year, I can't imagine going back. A lot of final event information is only available in the "Activity Highlights" posts on the discussion forum. Do we need to find an auxiliary way to get this information out to the non-forum users? For example: emails that could be sent by hostess only to those registered for an event.

I would agree with all of this. When we're in a mainstream public setting we do need to avoid behavior and presentation which draws negative attention. Those whose presentation is unconventional do need to consider the comfort and feelings of others in our group. "Consideration of others" was the principle we agreed upon when this whole BDR (behavior/dress/restroom) thing came to a head 10 years ago.

It is a two-way street. For "safe venue" activities and activities such as EHM with a relaxed dress code, everyone has to make a conscientious effort not to be easily annoyed. :)

> I noticed that about a third of surveyed attendees did not use MyDLV at all.

Some of those who don't use MyDLV pick up this forum via e-mail or via Yahoo Groups. The content is essentially the same on all media. We rolled out MyDLV in early 2011 and since then the survey has shown a shift in the numbers from those reading the forum via e-mail/Yahoo to MyDLV.

> Do we need to find an auxiliary way to get this information out to the

I don't think we need to send out more information, but encourage those who attend to read what's out there already. Most of our general mailings just prior to the event will have references to forum postings, and they will be just one mouse click away.

> emails that could be sent by hostess only to those registered for an event.

We have, on occasion, made lists of signed-up people available to Coordinators for things like this. I think that needs to be done on a case by case basis depending on the need and the Coordinator's preference.

Inappropriate dress code.

I travel 2400 miles once a year to an event that means a lot to me.
(Probably only 1600 miles by air), I have helped on various events over
the years since my first DLV 2002 and have ran a couple of relatively
easy ones myself but I will Not accept ridiculous dress code at anything
I am running.

The dress code should be a "Code" and not a suggestion, We give people a
wide selection to chose from in our suggested guidelines yet every now
and then some [unreadable nonstandard characters] comes along, pushes
the envelope and wants to be in the spotlight totally in the wrong way.
(Please don't ask for examples, they are in the past.)

If I put the effort in to run something nice then have someone come
along who is dressed with the intention of being *In Your Face* or
otherwise inappropriate then they are not going to ruin my day or my
once a year vacation either!

Similarly If I am an assisting the Hostess then I would be very upset if
someone tried to ruin our event with totally inappropriate dress or
gadgets.

The majority of our people look forward to this for 1 year and to have
it ruined and have to walk away from an event because of someone else
who ignores everyone's wishes is annoying so let's stop catering to one
person every time something distasteful happens and deal with it.

Look at it this way..If I run an event and it is ruined by someone like
this and then everyone jumps on board and has sympathy for the Single
perp.... Then everyone runs away en masse and hides from it then I will
not run an event big or small or help ever again. This is Not
Halloween.

If someone wants to run an event specially catering to this sort of
thing then by all means do it. Just let me know when and where and I
will avoid it like the Plague. I come to Vegas with the gang to have fun
and this would definitely not be fun for me.

Katie.

Annie, I often wondered why you don't use bold print to highlight
important words in the emails you send out to the group. For example, A
personalized link if it was in bold text would stand out and help people
such as this gal who had a difficult time navigating through the stack
of emails she obviously kept from previous DLV. Or to help the gal that
drove all the way from LA only to not find anybody and return home.

Huh???? What a waste of gas! The emails do have a lot of information
because they need to have it, and some people don't take the time to
carefully read every word, and just end up glancing at the whole email
and miss some vital information. If those important key words were in
bold text maybe they would act as a traffic sign that read "Hey you,
slow down...here's some very important information for you!" Again, just
my two pennies worth for today!

Why not have each coordinator e responsible for making their own
activity/event poster with the words DLV Function Here and post it by
the entrance.

And if you want you can even put a photo of the event coordinator(s),
with a brief description of what you're wearing at that event (just
kidding) so that those ladies who are having such a hard time locating
the group won't get discouraged when they can find anybody, turn around
and leave.

More two cents!

What am at now? Probably six cents? Maybe I should try for ten cents
worth of my thoughts....
