Bob,
Stating the correct date is important - and we should not mis-lead
anyone with the wrong OFFICAL date.
No, you are not correct. Its not semantics. Its not on the 18th. For
those not interested - stop here. Jamie's entry says it very nicely and
very short and to the point. The rest of this shows other independent
web sites to explain that its on the 20th.
---
You stated it was on the 18th, quoting your email: "but yesterday
(11-18-11) was the Day of Remembrance".
Also, the added word 'International" from the title of the web site does
NOT always mean its different - its the same in this situation.
Look at the page again - Go to the web page:
http://www.transgenderdor.org/
Yes, The Top Title states "International" Look BELOW it, in the framed
window with a burning candle as the background, it states:"13th Annual
Transgender Day of Remembrance" and "November 20, 2011". There is a
quote and the URL of the offical web site.
In that Frame - there is NO "International" nor does it have the 18th.
This frame also appears on many other sites that talk about TDoR
Go to Wikipedia's page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_Day_of_Remembrance
Quoting from the second paragraph:
"The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1998 by Gwendolyn Ann
Smith, a transgender graphic designer, columnist, and activist[3], to
memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts[4].Since
its inception, TDoR has been held annually on November 20th[5], and has
slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an
international day of action."
What date is printed? The 20th
Go to: another web-site:
http://www.shewired.com/news/2011/11/19/transgender-day-remembrance-sunday-no
vember-20-2011
Quoting again from the first line:
"Sunday, November 20th marks the 13th annual Transgender Day of
Remembrance."
shewired.com is website of Here Media - a american address:
Here Media Inc.
10990 Wilshire
Blvd, Penthouse
Los Angeles, CA 90024
Based in LA - its a American/US company.
Why don't they say the 18th if that was the offical date or observed
date on the 18th? Because its NOT the 18th in the US - its on the 20th.
Again, where does it have "International"? It doesn't.
It has BECOME a internationally OBSERVED day, but as Jamie said - its
still the same thing - and that day is 11/20. Its not two separate and
different events.
I also stated that the first web site (transgenderdor.org) stated events
all over the world that were either on the 20th or days before or after.
The OFFICAL day is STILL the 20th. When its observed - its up to the
individual or the event organizer.... like other holidays in the US, as
Jamie stated.
For example Studio 54 had its official Halloween party on the 29th this
year. It wasn't on the OFFICAL day of the 31st. It doesn't make
Halloween to be on the 29th.
