Lately, I've read a lot of negative commentary on the state of the I P ... can any local girls speak into this? I've stayed at the Sahara for the last 3 years, but it has been downgraded this year ... is this warranted? ;^)

I'm not local, but I've stayed at the Imperial Palace recently.

It's not upscale by any means, but it's clean and comfortable. I would say that my rooms were of Hampton Inn quality.

My only real complaint about the IP is slow elevators. This was particularly annoying one Saturday evening when I was late and had to return to the room for something I forgot.

Oh, one other picky complaint. They closed the Teahouse Coffee Shop, which was very good, and replaced it with the Hash House a Go Go. This is an oh-so-trendy breakfast place with larger portions and much larger prices.

On the good side, I have to say that the IP Buffet has improved quite a bit.

I believe the primary reason for the failure of the Sahara to pass the vote this year was a detailed first-person report from one of our volunteers, who in the past has been an outspoken Sahara fan, enumerating many closures and cutbacks on the Sahara property. This was confirmed by a couple who also used to be fans of the Sahara.

I had read most message boards about the imperial palace. I know that
it needs renovation, but cleanliness and the comments from a few
refering to bugs bother me. Being Direct as I am, I contacted Harrah's
about the bug comments. I spefically mentioned the comments on message
boards and asked for their response. The followin it the email they
sent in response.

I stayed at the IP two years ago for DLV. Like Annie said, the IP is an old gal way past her prime, but the room rates are dirt cheap for a hotel in the middle of all the action. And yes the elevators are a hassle. If your not cool with being jammed in the elevator with a bunch of people waiting for slow elevators, then the IP is not for you.

On the plus side, I never had a problem with the staff and actually made friends with the gal selling cheap jewerly at the base of the elevetors. She wanted me to drop by every time I changed outfits to check my out.

Okay, maybe I missed something so I reread the letter a few times. Am I the only
one who noticed that the presence of pests is not specifically denied ? If it
were my business and I could specifically state that there are no pests in my
hotel I would do so, not avoid mentioning the presence or lack of pests.

Judgment: Avoid at all costs.

Well Imperial Palace is not my cup of tea. However ANY hotel can have
bedbugs no matter what class the hotel falls in. I for one appreciate
that someone acknowledged Jills concerns, instead of denying or
pretending it would never happen at their hotel. I have dealt with
blatent denial at a hotel. The best thing to do is to try and do a bed
check (and headboard surrounding areas) before your luggage arrives at
ANY hotel you stay at- for me I check any hotel I stay in. If you
carry your own luggage leave it in the bathroom while you check.

I guess pests in this case means bugs. I'm sure all rooms
have bugs, its just they may be small and can't
be easily seen (ie dust mites, fleas, small roaches, 'crabs',
and grant ants). Its the visible big ones that are
noticed the most.

A food source usually attracts bugs into the open
may it be a snack left in the open or crumbs from
food consumed in the room, or crumbs in the
trash can. It can also be the human body.

The one I worry about - which is growing in areas
affected - and are spread especially via hotel rooms
are the bed bugs. These are very nasty, they bite
and suck your blood, and tend to go home with
you and infect your home. All they need is to hitch
a ride in your luggage or carry on that is open during
the hotel stay.

Seems the only way to kill and eradicate them once
they are in the home is to heat the whole house and
its contents to around 150 degrees, because the
current strain has morphed to be resistant of current
professional grade pesticides.

If its found in the bed - its already in the carpet,
furniture, drapes, drawers, closets, possibly towels,
basically in the whole room and probably the whole
hotel floor or multiple floors. They are very nasty.

Hotels are constantly battling this new upsurge in
these bugs. All it takes for it to start is some
guest bringing it in with their luggage. The cleaning
staff would probably see them first, for they
service the rooms, and I'm sure the room is
then cleaned professionally to try to eradicate them.

I was told to check the bed first, by checking the
sheets when you get into the room before doing
anything else. If the bed is infected, bugs would be
on the sheet.

Any other ways to check?

I'm not sure how up to date this site is, or how accurate the reportings
(or non-reportings) may be, but according to the registry, Imperial
Palace is clean:

Looking at Las Vegas there are some very swanky properties listed, such as Wynn, Venetian, Planet Hollywood. Yes, there are some fornicatoria in there too. I don't see anything for Imperial Palace.

Wow, looking at NYC I see Four Seasons, Park Central, Waldorf Astoria, Grand Hyatt ... (Pottery Barn?) ?????

Over the 14 years of DLV I can't recall any attendee reports of bedbugs anywhere. The only report of any vermin I can recall was for the long-closed east motel annex of the San Remo, and that was 2001-2002 or so. IIRC this was wiggly things crawling along the floor or baseboard.

Let me ask everyone this: Has anyone here personally witnessed bedbugs or any vermin at any of our suggested hotels, anytime?

Has anyone heard any reports from any real-life person with whom they are acquainted regarding bedbugs or any vermin at any of our suggested hotels, or even any hotels at which our people may want to stay?

Has anyone heard any otherwise-confirmed bedbug (or any other vermin) reports from any sources other than from unknown individuals posting on the Internet?

I think the best source of information that we have on the conditions at any hotel is that of those we know and trust who have stayed at the various properties. Such are the cases of the Sahara reports, which convinced our ORG Group to vote down the Sahara this year, and the reports of gestapo-like restroom incidents at two properties in the recent past.
