Sorry for being naive, but...

Can we have a explaination of the definition
of what is a "herding the cats event"
for those unfamiliar with this phrase
in this disc group, and define which "envelope"
it would be "pushing" specifically to this
idea?

I have my own interpretation on what
this means... But need a clarification so
as not to incorrectly interpret the meaning of
what is being said about how attendees will
behave or react to this idea, and understand
the official and correct interpretation.

LOL!

In this context, it comes down to the fact that a group of
TGs are simply not going to do what they don't want to do. :)

To generalize, TGs tend to be fiercely independent, and are
very often obstinate and obdurate in behavior patterns.

The term "herding cats" or more correctly "attempting in vain
to herd cats" :) has been around for decades, possibly centuries,
although often times incorrectly attributed to Trent Lott. It
refers to the futility of a task which is opposed by innate,
often passive, resistance.

In other words, don't expect everyone to wear green on
Thursday just because somebody says to wear green on Thursday!
(Wait, where have I heard that one before?) :) :)

In the context of DLV, JoAnn got me using the term when it
comes to about anything that the attendees tend to resist.
This natural resistance is something that we have to take
into consideration when planning about anything.

Now on a positve note, we've started calling the now-popular
sub-activity on the Limo Tour, the Fremont Street walk, as
the "Walk of the cats" or the "Herding of the cats", which
did elicit a degree of griping when we skipped it one year! :)

Ditto on the capri pants.

Has a little black dress cocktail event ever been done?

Red shoes with the LBD would be a stand out in the crowd!

We can expand this a little also... not only a little black dress
cocktail event, but to extended it, (possibly inc a dinner)
for those that have been asking for this type of event,
as a start for a night of clubbing and dancing. I've seen
alot of single ggs in their exotic little black dresses going to
night clubs not only for drinks, but to dance.
DLV already has a list of venues we have used in
prior years for cocktails, dancing, and clubbing.

Kumiko--

I'm sure you are on target for the meanings of the terms, but it is
always good to be certain---

The phrase of "herding cats" is a term that I use when referring to the
individualistic nature of people when trying to head them into a certain
direction. It is similar to trying to "herding cats" who are very
individualistic and resist going in any particular direction due to
their very nature as compared to cattle, sheep, etc.

The phrase of "pushing the envelop" is a term that I use when referring
to trying to fit someone or something into a plan, program, event, etc.
which has constraints of time, people volunteering, cost to do it, etc.
It is similar to having too large of a document for the envelop and your
having to "squeeze it" into the envelop and it may not happen, or you
tear the envelop in the process.

Thank you Annie and JoAnn for the clarification.

I don't think I've ever seen any DLV themed dress
event that had a 100% participation when there was
a large number of people attending that event.
Moreso since it has always been optional and not
required.

What you were saying is true.

Any themed dress night, participating or not,
will make us more noticeable as a group to the
public. That is one observation to consider,
if a attendee considers being read is a problem.

Its also fun to wear the themed outfit to those
themed events. It gave me a chance to wear
outfits in public for the first time that I would
have never done. That was definitely fun to do.

Example, dressing up as a femme character and
going to and watching the midnight run of RHPS
at a cinema in LV, or dressed like a escort and
going to NSD.

We are definitely all strongly independent thinkers and
do-ers.

Like wearing capri pants, some like them, some
don't. :-) Me? I'm in the middle. There are so
many styles, patterns, colors, and lengths of capris
today. Some I don't look good in, and don't like
those, but, others I do look good in, so I like and
wear those. For me its always based on what is
worn in combination with it, where the final resulting
combination shows a passable or even better, a
blending femme image.
