Hi
This is a 50/50 call for me - assuming I come to DLV this year.
I would like to reiterate a couple of points made by others and then
give some of my views.
Some years back we had a number of ending functions at Carlucci's (or
whatever) over on Tropicana. The first year, the food was good and there
was a reasonable turnout. The next time I recall that I and others had
decided that we didn't want to eat there, we had other plans. That year
there was considerable pressure being placed by members of the org team
on getting people to attend. The issue as I recall was there was worry
that there was going to be an unacceptably high level of non attendees
or no shows.
The obligations on the senior people in DLV are there despite this being
primarily a volunteer operation. I can see a repeat of the Carlucci
situation where in order to get a maximum attendance pressure will be
applied.
There a saying that goes along the lines that perception is truth and
equally if you talk something down enough it will be as bad as expected!
Now I have no idea what the food will be like at the Italian American
Centre nor do I know what the facilities are like. But given the "bad
press" this place is getting already, selling this to the wider attendee
base may be difficult.
No one has stated what the minimum number will be but lets assume its 50
and we get 60 or so signing up. Will all of the sixty go through and pay
or will there be drop off to under the magic threshold?? I see risks
around this because of the cost, the up front payments and the apparent
indifference from many about attending.
Now the positive side is that I love to wear long gowns; I love to dress
up and this type of activity would be attractive. My partner loves to
dance and I certainly like dancing when I'm in girl mode.
Packing and carrying gowns has never been a problem even the fancy ones.
They can be purchased relatively inexpensively at the outlet fashion
dress store in Las Vegas although if you need to buy one you need the
time to go do that and it is an added cost for what only ever be one
"real world" use.
So I think its a 50/50 call.
From a DLV perspective this approach is sort of a departure from
anything in the past. It is the sort of activity that would be expected
at a traditional TG conference. Given the location is off strip and out
of the public eye this won't appeal to those looking for exposure and
will probably inhibit the easy relocation for after party activities
back on the strip area.
As an aside I always considered the use of Trevi as an opportunity to
dress up a bit. Some have certainly taken advantage of it in the past
although many also go with business dress / pants suit or similar and
look appropriately dressed. Using Trevi for this on a Friday or Saturday
night seems to me to be a bit risky. Firstly being a business night I'm
sure they would impose some deposit requirements if we were to use the
upstairs area and secondly for new comers, newbies getting to Trevi is
very public trek through the Ceasers Forum shops. There's no easy way to
get there without facing the crowds, much larger and more party going on
Fridays and Saturdays than perhaps on a mid week night.
Hugs
Michelle
