That perennial question:

Most frequently asked question has always been "How many are coming?"

From now until DLV, we will include the current headcount in the weekly
mailings. Look toward the end of the mailing under the title "Latest
Headcount."

This year we will not be trying any extrapolation or fudge factors to
try to predict total turnout or account for no-shows. What you see will
be the raw numbers of those signed up at the time.

Sahara Hotel rates:

That rate is definitely good. History has shown that at the Sahara, if
you book the lower rate for the Tunis tower, about half the time they
will actually check you in to the newer Tangiers tower.

Well, we currently (as of Saturday morning) have 11 significant
others signed up, (at least) one of which happens to be male.

There have been a couple of attempts to plan some SO's activities, but
they have never worked out. We're still open to the idea if anybody

Golf list:

A test message was sent out to the DLV Golf mailing list a couple days
ago. If you are on the golf list and did not receive this test message,
please let me know (just reply to this mailing) and we will be sure to
get things straightened out.

For those who are interested in playing golf with the DLV group (this
is scheduled for Friday morning, May 3) and are not on this list,
please send a quick note to: dlvgolf@geekbabe.com and request to be

Getting the absolute best hotel deal is somewhat of an exercise for the
student. You may have to do some homework, and it looks like you have
started doing it.

Yes, people are paying those rates quoted above, but you may not know
the whole story. The $27 and $39 may be casino rates, offered to known
players, but again, these are in line with what others are reporting
elsewhere in this mailing.

Let's look at this one, however ...

At first glance, you would think you are gonna get a room for $10/day.

WRONG! That's the old "per person, double occupancy" deal, and, imao,
it is borderline deceptive. The room is $20, not $10 per day. I would
go as far as to suspect the person who paid $27 above was actually on
this rate and it came to $27 or so with taxes and nuisance fees. In any
case, I'm sure the $10/20 rate is for weekdays only, weekends higher.

Anyway, we don't know if that $10/20 rate is good over the DLV period,
but there's an easy way to find out. Phone the hotel and ask. Say you
heard the rate on the highway stations.

If it isn't, the Sahara has real, bookable rates in the $30's weekdays
during DLV, and some of the Station properties (I would suggest Palace
for the DLV people) are quoting good to great rates for the DLV period.

There are two other quite decent $30-ish places reported in this
mailing.

Another good resource is the weekly LA Times listing, but as of this
date, the DLV period is not covered by these yet.

Sharing a room can be one way to make DLV more affordable. See notes
on room sharing below. This worked out well for a number of people
last year.

Rio and La Quinta:

As far as I know, none of the DLV people have stayed there, but the
local t* group had a trip to their shopping area a few years back and at
least one of our people visited somethng over there (club?) last year.

Rio will be more expensive than our three suggested places, but not as
expensive as Bellagio/Mandalay/etc.

I can't say for sure how t-friendly they really are, but I would guess
that if you pay your bill, don't rub it in anybody's face, and don't
trash the place, you would be a welcome guest in either mode. This is
the case for most every place.

La Quinta has (at least) three hotels in Las Vegas. One is on the
Strip, as you mentioned, another is over on Paradise, the third is out
northwest. One of our people has stayed at the northwest one and has
liked it.

These will not be as nice as Rio, but not as expensive. Almost every
travel agent books La Quinta, or you can reserve yourself with a credit
card at http://www.laquinta.com/ $70-ish per day.

Hair and hotels:

Elevators are s-l-o-w at many hotels. IIRC, at the IP, there is a second
large bank of elevators toward the front that is a lot quicker than the
main one back there by the shops. Also, IIRC, there is a stealth
elevator toward the rear of the tower complex that is muck quicker, and
not well known.

who want to be near to the others, we're not married to any of them. :)

Actually, I've stayed at Terrible's (the old Continental completely
renovated) once. Very decent for the price. Just a bit off the main
uh, drag, uh, so to speak. :)

I've played at Arizona Charlies East (and west) but never stayed there.
IIRC, it's near Boulder and Flamingo, definitely off the beaten path.

I would recommend the above places only for those who have their own
vehicle.

Palace Station:

Those are very good rates, especially $19 for weekdays. You may very
well get some company over there. :)

For those listening in, Palace Station is just west of the Strip on
Sahara. The courtyard is motel type buildings kind of off to the side
of the main building. Palace Station is known to be t-friendly.

Hotel question:

Sahara and IP are very close as far as what you get and the quality of
what you get. I'm assuming Boardwalk is similar. The real difference
between them, therefore, is "Location Location Location" and I'm
assuming that's the big reason for price differential.

Sahara is North Strip, in a less trendy area. IP is right by the "Four
Corners" intersection of LV Blvd and Flamingo, dead center, heart of
the action. Boardwalk is in the Monte Carlo/Aladdin/MGM area close to
the intersection of LV Blvd and Tropicana.

One advantage to the North Strip is far less traffic. Advantage of the
center Strip is more facilities within walking distance. As far as DLV
is concerned, there's no clear advantage to any of the three, it's
whatever you prefer.

Room sharing:

DLV, just like any other event where people pay for hotel rooms, can
be more affordable if people share rooms. We want to (again) have a
"roommate clearing house" in this mailing list.

If you've already booked a room, and would like for somebody else to
stay with you and share the expense, or if you're looking for somebody
who has extra space, please write to this list (dlv@geekbabe.com) with
the word "Roommate" somewhere in the subject line. Please include the
following items in your e-mail:

1. Your name.

2. Your e-mail address.

3. What date you will be arriving and what date you will be departing.

4. Do you have a room to share, or do you need space in one.

5. Any annoying habits or traits you have. (Do you smoke, do you snore,
are you a very early riser, compulsive talker, late-nite MTV addict,
etc.)

6. Any additional notes or comments.

When we have roommate items, we will include them in a special ongoing
section toward the bottom of each mailing. Those interested in sharing
rooms can then contact each other by e-mail and make arrangements.

Please remember, any roommate agreements are private arrangements
strictly between the people involved, and I or anybody else cannot be
responsible if things don't work out (etc. etc., yada-yada, you know the
drill).
