Only 80 days left, gang!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Welcome:

Welcome to those who recently joined. Lots of new people on the list and
lots of new registrations, as you can see by the numbers below. We're on
track for a fantastic turnout and a great time in (April and) May!

If anybody has any questions, concerns, or just wants to get their input,
just reply to this message.

SO's luncheon:

One of the local (to Las Vegas) SO's has offered to host(ess) a luncheon
for the significant others of our people. The day has not been selected
yet. As of this time I think we have 12 SO's signed up to attend DLV as
of this time.

Yes, male SO's are invited to this as well.

We would like to see a "show of hands" from those who would be
interested in this. If you (or particularly, your SO) are interested,
please hit REPLY and just give a one-liner expressing interest. Of
course, if you have comments, questions, concerns, etc., say that too.

This is not a formal headcount, this is just a show of interest.

Thanks in advance to Diane for volunteering to so this.

(in unison) Thanks, Diane!

Hotel confusion:

>Pardon me here, but I'm very confused and even think I'm getting mixed
>signals. Which hotel/s is/are the preferred Diva 2002 hotel? In one
>newsletter I'm seeing all kinds of reviews of what I think you want me
>to stay at, in another, you quote prices on other hotels?

Sorry for any confusion.

Our hotel suggestions are mainly for two purposes:

1. For those who want to stay in the same place as other DLV people.

2. For those who are unfamiliar with the LV hotels and want a place which
is known to be t-friendly, or at least t-oblivious.

This year we are suggesting three, the Boardwalk, Imperial Palace, and
Sahara, with no explicit preference for any. Yes, I admit that may be a
bit confusing, and there's been some off-line talk of limiting this to
one for next year, but that may or may not happen.

When you select your place to stay, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you want to be in the same hotel with others attending DLV? If so,
one of the three suggested hotels will be for you. Choose between them
using any method you wish, price, location, wallpaper color ...

2. Are you on a tight budget? If so, you probably want to make price your
primary consideration. You might also consider sharing a room.

3. Will you have your own vehicle with you? If so, you can stay almost
anywhere with ease. If not, you probably want to consider one of our
three suggested hotels or a nearby Strip or close off-Strip hotel.

4. Do you enjoy playing the tables or machines right before you go to
bed? Do you like waking up and walking directly to breakfast? Do you
want a 24 hour restaurant on the property? Do you want room service,
valet service, doorman service? If so, you probably want a full-service
casino hotel, either on the Strip or downtown.

5. Do you prefer a smaller low-rise, perhaps drive-up motel style
building to a hotel tower? If so, you may want an off-Strip motel or
one of the casino-hotels that offers these as an option, such as the
Imperial Palace. (They have several motel-style buildings behind the
parking structure and main towers.

LeeAnna writes:

+The room for the Pajama Party is a NON-SMOKING room. There will be a

Thanks, LeeAnna. As you and everybody can see, there's a lot if interest
in this already. Looks like it's gonna be a very fun evening.

Hotel feedback:

Dorothy writes:

>Nice room and I could get to and from the room without going through

Thanks, Dorothy. These two places are indeed options for those who may
be on a limited budget, or for those who don't necessarily want to stay
with the others.

Laura has already booked people for air/hotel packages for this DLV. If

Liberace:

>Hey Annie, are we going to the Liberace Museum this year?

LOL, I was waiting for you to ask that again. :) :) :)

For those new this year, this is almost a running gag on the list here.
We did this the very first year, but never made it back, although it
has been mentioned each year as a possibility.

If you or anybody really wants to do this, you might consider going over
there Friday before dinner. It's in the same complex as both the dinner
place and the annual mixer place. If there's enough demand we could do a
group thing and get this on the calendar, as Friday afternoon is open.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Mirror mirror:

>One of my main criteria in selecting a hotel is if the hotel has a
>great mirror and great lighting; for putting on make up.

The Sahara, IP, Stardust standard rooms, and Riviera all have very
standard vanity areas with their rooms, ok, but I would not call it a
great mirror and great lighting. Along the same line of what I have
at home.

In 1999 I had a suite at the Stardust which had a very large two-sink
vanity with very good lighting, but that was a one-time thing.

The standard rooms almost anywhere will have standard mirrors and
lighting.

The fancier rooms and suites will most likely have expanded vanity
areas.

I do know of two web sites that give detailed room descriptions, and you
might check those out.

http://www.cheapovegas.com/

This is very tongue-in-cheek, but covers the fancy places as well as the
cheap places.

http://www.hwth.com/LASVEGAS/hotel_room_descriptions.htm

This is probably the most complete archive of LV room descriptions.
HWTH (Hanging With The Hogs) is a very macho site, so I don't think
the majority of the users there care much about (or admit to it) the
mirrors and vanity areas.

>Does any one know if the Sands has these things?

Not only doesn't the Sands have mirrors, it doesn't have rooms, slot
machines, or even a building. It's been gone for 5 years. Venetian is in
its place. :)

>From a conversation on the DLVORG list, Cat has this note:

+There are not many hotels (even upscale) that have great lighting and
+mirrors. The simplest solution is a makeup mirror. (Thank goodness my
+daughter gave me one for Christmas this past year). Or, get some 150
+watt bulbs and change them out.

Thanks, you are a woman of integrity in both universes, Ms. Cat. :)

... and Yvonne adds ...

>The place that I stay on my trips is at Main Street Station (downtown
>area). Each room I've had (I can say that only for all the rooms I've
>been given - but my understanding is that each room has one) , has a 8

>anyone can see into the room (another words - adjustable). As far as
>the mirror, I can stand infront of it ( and several feet back also) and
>see everthing I need to see (or don't want to see).

Thanks, Yvonne. :)

And ... we should probably add, that the Delmar Motel has very large
mirrors ... on the ceiling. Just what you want for checking yourself
out when you are, uh, doing your makeup while lying on the bed. :)

There are also a few various room photos showing mirrors and vanity
stuff at:

Pajama party question:

>Suggestion/question...would it not better to have the sexy party after
>the Friday get together on Friday after the Goodtimes mixer, and just
>extend the good time?????

Well, uh, I dunno.

We already have dancing scheduled after the Annual Mixer, and that will
extend the good time into the wee hours.

Besides, this (pajama party) will give the weekenders a good reason to
come a few days early. :)

Sahara rates:

>The phone number for the Sahara that LeeAnna mentioned is for the
>Tropicana.

Thanks for the correction. The toll-free number for the Sahara is
888-696-2121. I just verified it.

>I called the Sahara and they had rooms, but no record of our group
>rate. Do we have one?

No, we do not have any special group rate, but the street rate is
quite reasonable.

>I booked the weekdays for $39 and weekends for $89. This is $20 more
>than she mentioned. Yes, this is for the old tower.

It could very well have changed since she put her registration in. Room
rates are a function of the phase of the moon, really.

>I also noticed that the dates are incorrect on the registration page.
>They are off by 1 day. I entered the correct date, but its the wrong
>day.

Ok, thanks, I found the problem. It's on the update page and the dates
were the old 2001 dates. I'm gonna correct any registrations that show
2001, so if you see an update of your registration that you did not
make, that's the reason.

>I'm looking forward to coming to Las Vegas.

And we're looking forward to having you with us.

Hotel and various:

>Tony and I reserved a room at the Sahara. Interestingly enough, going
>directly to the hotel's web page got us a better deal than the
>"guaranteed lowest price" online travel agencies.

Sometimes the hotel will give you a better rate, sometimes the travel
sites will. Room Rate Roulette, latest casino game!

Oh, the way that guaranteed lowest price deal works, if you find a lower
price, the travel site will cancel your reservation without charge, thus
giving you the opportunity to book elsewhere at the lower rate. :)

>>>have to have bloodymary's too (this might be Annie's new drink of

Uh, you mean vodka sour? :)

>>>If there are any suggestions for something else to do, please let me
>>>know.

>Take a boom box along and teach each other to dance. This is a very
>common thing to do at girls' parties.

>>>Annie, I just did my room reservation at the Sahara. They still have
>>>rooms at $39 in the older tower and $49 in the newer tower for our DLV
>>>weekday dates. The friday, saturday rates are $69/$79.

>I think we got $37 a day and $79 on weekends from Sahara's web page,
>but I don't recall any mention of the old or new tower. As long as the
>room is clean, we'll be OK with it, because we won't be hanging around.
>We'll always be out doing something.

Last year you were in the Tangiers Tower, which is the largest and
newest of the three towers there. The Tunis and Alexandria are older,
and they usually put the people paying the lower rates in there. I
actually like the Tunis Tower, the oldest of the three, mostly 'cuz
the elevator service seems to be much faster.

>>WRONG! That's the old "per person, double occupancy" deal, and, imao,
>>it is borderline deceptive. The room is $20, not $10 per day. I would
>>go as far as to suspect the person who paid $27 above was actually on
>>this rate and it came to $27 or so with taxes and nuisance fees.

>I think there is a percentage tax and a new California bail-out tax,
>and it worked out to about $7 a night for our room.

>>If it isn't, the Sahara has real, bookable rates in the $30's weekdays
>>during DLV, and some of the Station properties (I would suggest Palace
>>for the DLV people) are quoting good to great rates for the DLV period.

>Palace Station had the best rate of any we looked (at least on the
>travel agancies' sites), but we didn't want to be a mile west of the
>strip.

Palace Station is not bad, but as you say, it's west of the action.
