Welcome back:

Happy New Year!

Hope everybody enjoyed the holidays. :)

Welcome to those who just joined this list. We've had quite a few
newcomers lately. If you have any questions or concerns, just hit REPLY
and ask away.

Plans are going full speed ahead for DLV 2002 and everybody's getting
excited already. It looks like another record-setting event is now
underway!

For the next few months, up until just before DLV, we will be sending
out this mailing list "weekly as needed", meaning that we'll plan for a
mailing each Sunday, but skip a week if there's a very low volume of
traffic. We won't have any mid-week mailings unless there's something
*really* important that's time-critical. Right before DLV, we will
switch over to an as-needed mailing schedule.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
This mailing:

This mailing contains only "administrivial" items, in order to keep it
to a reasonable size. Some mailbag items have come in over the past
month or so, nothing of which is time-critical, and we'll begin with
those starting this coming Sunday.

Please read this issue over very carefully, as it contains many very
important items pertaining to your enjoyment of DLV 2002.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Spreading the word:

This is one thing you can do right now, without much effort, whether or
not you are actually planning to attend. I've lost count of those who
have written to the effect of "... if only I knew about this earlier
...". This has happened most years, right after DLV has just happened.
It's a shame to have people miss out. We certainly don't want to see
this repeat right after DLV 2002.

You can help spread the word in the following ways:

* Posters and flyers. No, you probably don't wanna post these on your
bulletin board at work :) or at the local supermarket, but if you know
of any venue that would be willing to display these, please let me know
and I'll get these to you. Places like a GLBT center, t-friendly
merchant, etc.

* If you are a member of a local support group, put a blurb in the
newsletter or announce it at a meeting.

* If you're on a mailing list or e-group, and you have not seen it
announced there, please make a brief announcement. Ditto on the
newsgroups you frequent.

* If you see one of those "TG Event Listings" that does not include
DLV, make a submission. We're already on most of the major ones, but
I'm sure there are those where we aren't. (Please be sure we're
on the 2002 listings, we're still getting a LOT of referrals from
DLV 2001 listings.)

* If your community has a local GLBT paper, submit a note to them for
their "Events and Activities" listing. Most will have an ongoing column
such as this.

* If you have a personal website, include a link to DLV at the url:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/

* Use your imagination!

Shipping clothing:

We realize that some of you may be a bit uneasy of the random luggage
inspections that are now occurring at the airports. Both one local
business and one of the local ladies have offered to receive shipments
for our people, whether it's for that reason, or just to avoid the
hassle of cramming all the stuff into suitcases and schlepping it all
over the place.

Details of this and contact information will be given, on request, to
those who have registered.

Please be aware that this is at your own risk, and the DLV organizers
and the local people cannot be responsible for loss, delay, damage, bad
weather, etc., etc., you know the drill.

I should also add that most hotels will receive shipments for guests.
The Sahara, for example, has a Business Service Office in the Tunis
Tower which does this regularly. Ditto over at the Riviera. Be aware
that there is a charge (not cheap, like $15-20) for this.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hotels:

This year we have added a third suggested hotel, the Boardwalk, which
is between the Monte Carlo and the Bellagio on the Strip. Web site is:

http://www.hiboardwalk.com/

Update: A casino host at the Boardwalk has offered players rate to those
staying there for DLV. Please reply to this e-mail if you want contact
information.
. . . . .

Again, we are also suggesting (in alphabetical order) both the Imperial
Palace and the Sahara for our DLV people. Both are convenient,
reasonably priced, and known to be friendly to our people.

http://www.imperialpalace.com/

http://www.saharahotel.com/

Most travel agents and room brokers book rooms at all three. Getting the
absolute lowest rates is an exercise for the student. Sometimes the hotel
itself will quote the lowest rate, often it will not. Sometimes they will
admit lower rates exist if you ask them.

We will hopefully have some promotional rates available from some of
these, stay tuned for details.

Phil Feldman keeps a very good list of specials advertised in the {LA
Times} at the URL:

http://home.earthlink.net/~mjceditor/ladeals.html

You don't have to live in LA to take advantage of these.

As many of you know, room rates in LV change frequently, without notice,
and without obvious reason.

As always, everybody is free to stay wherever they choose. Last year,
most of our people stayed at the Sahara or the IP, but we had people
at many other places. There are some notes about the t-friendliness of
various LV hotels at the URL:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/lvvendors.html
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Big Sisters:

I would like to take a few minutes (lines) to say a word about our Big
Sister program. This is geared primarily toward those who are new and
don't have much public exposure, or those who may be feeling a bit
uneasy about the upcoming trip, but Big Sisters are available to anybody
who needs one.

Big Sisters are DLV volunteer veterans who are standing by to help as
needed, either prior to DLV, or during.

Before DLV, if you would like to correspond with somebody one-to-one
about problems or concerns regarding DLV, just send a brief note to
dlv@geekbabe.com and say that you would like to get in touch with a Big
Sister. Examples of concerns might be questions that you don't feel
comfortable asking in the mailing list here, request for an honest
fashion critique, etc.

During DLV, if you need some fashion advice, Big Sisters can help. If
you are uneasy and can't get the nerve to walk out of your hotel room
(this has happened) we'll have a Big Sister meet you, assure you, and
escort you if necessary.

If you think you would like to be put in touch with a Big Sister, just
send a note to dlv@geekbabe.com and we'll get you in contact with one.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Room sharing:

DLV, just like any other event where people pay for hotel rooms, can
be more affordable if people share rooms. We want to (again) have a
"roommate clearing house" in this mailing list.

If you've already booked a room, and would like for somebody else to
stay with you and share the expense, or if you're looking for somebody
who has extra space, please write to this list (dlv@geekbabe.com) with
the word "Roommate" somewhere in the subject line. Please include the
following items in your e-mail:

1. Your name.

2. Your e-mail address.

3. What date you will be arriving and what date you will be departing.

4. Do you have a room to share, or do you need space in one.

5. Any annoying habits or traits you have. (Do you smoke, do you snore,
are you a very early riser, compulsive talker, late-nite MTV addict,
etc.)

6. Any additional notes or comments.

When we have roommate items, we will include them in a special ongoing
section toward the bottom of each mailing. Those interested in sharing
rooms can then contact each other by e-mail and make arrangements.

Please remember, any roommate agreements are private arrangements
strictly between the people involved, and I or anybody else cannot be
responsible if things don't work out (etc. etc., yada-yada, you know the
drill).
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pre-registration is open:

Quite a few registrations have already come in. As of this time, we
have more people signed up than we had total at DLV 1997 and DLV 1998
COMBINED (including 5 SO's so far)! If this trend continues, we will have
yet another record turnout at DLV 2002!

When you make the decision to attend, please stop by the url:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg.html

This will help us better plan for DLV.

The information we collect will be for DLV planning only, we will not
give any of it out, etc.

Yes, this will also help us answer the perennial question "how many
people are coming" earlier and more accurately.

It's perfectly fine to indicate "don't know" in many of the fields.

This year, on-line cancellation, update, and code recovery are
available.

Please do not give out this URL to people who are not on this list.
Regular open registration will begin in February.

NOTE TO RETURNEES, VOLUNTEERS, AND LAS VEGAS LOCALS: Please register,
nobody is assumed to be on the list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Volunteers:

Diva Las Vegas runs entirely on volunteer help. Although we had an
excellent response to our call for volunteers so far, there are a few
areas in which we can use some additional help, including ...

1. ACTIVITY COORDINATORS and ASSISTANTS. We still have a few planned
activities that need to be "adopted" by one or more people who are
willing to do the busy-work necessary to make them happen. If you are
interested in helping along these lines, please hit REPLY and say so.

2. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS. If you will have a vehicle at DLV and don't mind
giving others rides to and from our activities, please let us know. (You
can indicate this on your registration form on the web.)

I realize many of you do not yet know if you will be able to attend,
but it's fine to provisionally volunteer.

Yes, it's ok to volunteer to "help out any way you can". You will be
taken up on your offer. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Web pages:

Yes, many of us have personal web sites. A great way to become
acquainted before the big event in (April and) May is to take a look at
each others' sites. We keep a running list of web sites of DLV people,
and if you have a site and it's not listed, we would love to list it.

Due to the fact that many pages have disappeared or moved over the last
year, we are starting our list again from scratch.

Just send in your URL to dlv@geekbabe.com (or just hit REPLY) and we
will add it to the list.
