Lots of things happening:

Welcome to those who just joined the list. Any questions or concerns,
please let us know.

Hotel rate updates: Travelworm (www.travelworm.com) is showing the
Sahara at $49/85 for the DLV dates, lower than the Sahara web site.

They show the Imperial Palace at $85/129 with the IP web site showing
sold out for "regular" rooms and $104/142 for "deluxe" rooms over the
DLV dates.

Palace Station web site is showing $39/$119, which is most likely the
lowest you will ever see any of our 2005 suggested hotels.

Boardwalk is showing an average rate of $65 for the DLV period on their
web site.

All prices here do not include taxes and misc. nuisance fees.
. . . . .

Latest numbers: 66 validated registrations plus 14 SO's for a total
validated headcount of 80 so far.

Thanks to everybody for your cooperation with the registration process!
. . . . .

We did receive a concern about this list again becoming quite verbose.

I'll try to watch the length, but with the addition of the activity
highlights (which people said they liked) and the dress items (which
people said they wanted) this year's general mailings will most likely
be longer than last years. Most of the chit-chat and discussion has
been moved over to the Discussion Forum.

All of the critical announcements will always be on the top, so if
things like the activity/dress/schedule/web things are not of interest
to you, you may be able to safely skim/skip.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Golf:

Golf has been tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 24, AM and PM.

Wednesday evening will most likely be the least intense of any of the
weekend evenings this year, so those who want to play can be bright-eyed
and bushy-tailed without missing out on any of the high-profile must-do
activities.

"Going Twice!" If no objections are received by the end of January, this
will be changed from pencil to ink. :)

If you would like to play golf at DLV 2005, we ask that you join the
DLV Golf Mailing List by sending a brief e-mail to dlvgolf@geekbabe.com
which states that you would like to receive the golf list.

All golf discussion from this point forward will be redirected to the
DLV Golf List.

Pity Party Performers:

Our second annual Pity Party will be presented as one option for
Thursday evening of DLV week.

Highlight of this activity will be a 30-60 minute drag show on a
regular nightclub stage. The star of this show will be ... YOU!

As Mindy writes:

+lets hear from anybody who would like to perform at the party.
+depending on interest each person could do from one to 3 numbers.

+anybody willing would be welcome (from the seasoned drag queen to the
+gee i always wanted to do that) ... duets would
+be possible ...

+performers would need to provide thier music on cd and let me know in
+advance the number or numbers they would like to preform so we dont
+have any duplication.

If anybody would like to consider performing, just reply to this mailing
and Mindy will get in touch with you.

We will have more detail on the Pity Party when we feature it in one of
the Activity Highlight columns in a future mailing.

Dress - Dressing and the daily schedule:

Each (most) of our mailings between now and DLV will have something
along the subject of dress. This week we'll discuss dress, timing, and
the schedule.

Dressing for an entire day, or for several days in a row, can be a bit
overwhelming for those who are just used to dressing for an occasional
group meeting or evening out every so often. However, with some planning
and a few tricks, it can be quite do-able.

Again, this is presented with emphasis toward those who are new(er) to
public exposure.

Let's take a look at a typical DLV daily schedule, and discuss items
related to dressing and changing for the various activities. Let's look
at Friday, since that's one day when most of our people will be present
in Las Vegas.
. . .

(Please note that this is written from a very early draft of the
schedule, times and activities may not be accurate, but will be used as
examples.)

+ 11:00am Secret Garden / Dolphin Habitat (Mirage - MS)
+ 11:00am Shopping trip (Mall(s) - MS)

The first items on our calendar for Friday start at 11:00am. You'll
have a choice of either a shopping trip or a visit to some popular
attractions at the Mirage.

If you want to go on either of these, you should plan to rise no later
than about 8:00am, earlier if you want to have breakfast before you go.

If you're not very experienced with routine skin/hair care and makeup,
you'll find that you will need about (at least) 2 hours from a cold
start to be ready for action. (Some who are quite experienced also cite
the 2-hour timeframe.) Also if you aren't staying near the rendezvous
point for this outing, plan on maybe 15-30 minutes or so of get-there
time.

Also be sure to allow time to correct mistakes with eye makeup, hair,
etc.

Timesaving hint: If you're one who does your nails daily, do your nail
polish last. It's natural to do this early in the process, but if it's
not fully dry, it can get messed up very easily, turning a time-crunch
into a major disaster!

Pantyhose and almost-dry nail polish do not mix! :(

Your outfit for these must be casual. A mainstream venue means
mainstream dress and mainstream behavior. You will also need comfortable
shoes. There's a bit of walking involved with both of these.

If you look at the women who shop in malls on a typical spring weekday,
or visit the tourist attractions on a weekday morning, you will find
that the outfits very often include such things as the shorts and tank
top combo or jeans and t-shirt, quite often times with some type of
athletic style shoes.

Now if you're the "Dammit, I didn't come all the way to Las Vegas to
wear jeans!" type, you will also see casual separates and coordinates,
those that are stylish and feminine, but not too dressy. Something like
this would be an option for you.

We'll discuss some daytime looks in more depth in an upcoming column.
. . .

+ 1:00pm Lunch With (or without) Ginger

You'll have quite a bit of latitude in your outfit for the daily Lunch
With Ginger. Almost any tasteful outfit from extremely casual to a
moderately dressy daytime look will be fine. If Lunch W(o)G will be your
first activity of the day, plan on rising no later than 11:00am, earlier
if you need travel time. Being fashionably late for Lunch With Ginger is
fine, but if you push it, you may find that the party is breaking up
just as you are arriving. :)

You will find some who attend Lunch With Ginger (and subsequent
Walk-Off) in boymode and then clean up and change after. If you're
pressed for time or a bit shy of the buffet crowd, this will be fine.

+ 2:00pm Walk Off Your Lunch (TBD)

This needs to be casual, but it doesn't have to be dowdy or frumpy. See
notes above regarding stylish casual separates/coordinates. Heels are
NOT recommended for this activity. Skip the heavy hardware too. :)
And no, nobody's gonna look down on you if you show up in boymode. :)
. . .

Day into evening:

Some of our attendees wear the same outfit from day into evening, and
some prefer to change. That's really a personal choice.

Here's one very important point, and this is a trap that many of those
who are new fall into.

You may think that your only option for the evening is to take a 2+ hour
break, wash off your face, shave, start from point zero again and do all
of your makeup over. Yes, quite a few DLV'ers do a complete change and
re-do every afternoon.

Here's a comment received in feedback a few years ago regarding time
crunches and missed activities:

+>Here's what I think the problem is. It takes me three hours from bare
+>metal till I'm ready to go out. End of the afternoon comes and I start
+>looking real scruffy, so I have to take it all down to bare metal
+>again and that takes another three hours.

This can be very rough on the skin, and is time consuming and often
times is unnecessary, even though you may be one with moderate to heavy
facial hair.

If you use a gentle electric razor (one with a "foil" head is great for
this) and a light touch, you can easily get rid of that "shadow" without
damaging the foundation. Touch up face, eyes, lips, hair as needed. With
a little practice you can overlay an evening look on a daytime look in
no time. This cuts your day into evening change time from 2-3 hours to
1/2 hour or so.

+ 6:00pm Happy Hour
+ 7:00pm Dinner
+ 8:30pm Annual Mixer
+ 11:30pm Dance Night

Happy Hour, Dinner, Annual Mixer, Dance Night. What you wear will most
likely be determined by how many of these and which of these you would
like to do. There really won't be any time to change between these.

Speaking of the Annual Mixer, if you are the first person to show Annie
a hardcopy printout of this article at the Annual Mixer, you will be
entitled to the libation of your choice. Yes, things like this will be
repeated between now and DLV.

About anything from casual to dressy, even a long dress if you feel like
it, is fine for all of these. If you don't want to change, your daytime
outfit will most likely be fine. If you want to dress up a bit more,
that will be fine too.

Clubwear that is not too extreme or revealing would be ok for the Annual
Mixer if you want to go dancing after, but clubwear/slutty/fetish is not
approprate for HH/dinner since these will be in a mainstream venue.

When you plan your outfit for these evening activities, also consider
what you may be doing AFTER your last DLV activity, such as gaming,
clubbing, early breakfast, etc., when planning your outfit.

When you retire for the evening:

Although it may be very late and you may be very tired and not very
lucid, take the time to properly remove your makeup and do a bit of skin
care. This is particularly important if you're not used to making up
each day. Clean your face with a mild face soap or cleanser. Be sure to
get it all off. You will want to then use a moisturizing lotion even if
you don't think you need it. You will thank yourself in the morning. Las
Vegas tends to be very dry, and even skin that's naturally oily can get
dry and sore.

Activity highlight -- Side trip to Death Valley:

Between now and DLV, each (most) of our mailings will feature one of
our activities in detail.

This week we feature our Monday side trip to Death Valley.

Our side trips to Area 51 and Rhyolite in previous years were very well
liked, so this year we're gonna plan something similar.

We'll carpool and explore the south end of Death Valley National Park,
with planned stops at Badwater, Devil's Golf Course, Artist's Drive,
Golden Canyon, the Visitor Center, and Zabriskie Point. It will be warm,
but decent and not nearly as hot as it will be in the summer.

Badwater is the site of the lowest-altitude paved road in the
hemisphere. This will be a very scenic trip. Bring your camera to
capture the scenery!

A brunch stop with several options (buffet, food court, coffee shop) is
planned on the way to Death Valley.

Dress: Casual required, appropriate shoes required (flats or athletic,
you will be walking on unpaved surfaces), boymode or girlmode. It's
estimated to be about 6 hours total, so wear something you are
comfortable wearing for several hours.

Cost: Modest donation to your driver's gas fund will be expected, plus a
portion of the park entry fee for your vehicle. Brunch will be on one's
own with several options, all reasonable in price.
