Proposed DLV 2005 dates:

Just a while ago (the vote was final as of Saturday morning) the DLV ORG
group voted to propose the timeframe of Sunday, April 24 thru Saturday,
April 30 for DLV 2005.

The votes for this timeframe represented not only the majority of the
votes cast, but the majority of those eligible to vote, making this a
very clear decision.

This timeframe has been announced as tentative on the DLV web site.

A one-month "call for comments" period is now open. Barring any serious
objections, these dates will become final on September 1.

Your comments are encouraged. You may comment either by replying to this
mailing or posting to the DLV Discussion Forum which is on the web at:

Please do not make any non-refundable travel or lodging arrangements
until the dates are announced as final, which is expected to occur on
or about September 1, 2004.

On the activity front:

Although the big news this month is the proposed dates, we've been doing
a lot of advance planning regarding the lineup of activities.

The floor is still open for comments and suggestions regarding our
activities. Don't be shy.

We're also still open for those who wish to volunteer to help plan
and implement the activities for DLV 2005. Comments, suggestions,
volunteers, just e-mail dlv@geekbabe.com or simply reply to this
mailing. Anyway ...

Air Tours. Back on the schedule. Some weekday morning.

Yes, High Tea is on the list.

There's talk about a side trip to Laughlin to see the Edwards Twins
Show. As of this time, we don't know their schedule, so this plan is
on hold pending a convenient date and show time.

News from Las Vegas is that Kenny Kerr's show is open again, and wheels
are turning in the direction of getting a DLV group to see Kenny and
company.

Speaking of shows, there's a movement to get a large group to see
Showgirls Of Magic during DLV 2005.

The Death Valley tour is a "go", most likely during the first part of
the week.

The daily Lunch With or Without Ginger will be repeated, possibly
varying the location (comments, gang?), followed by an optional daily
Walk Off Your Lunch With or Without Ginger. :)

And yes, plenty of that Quality Social Time<tm>! Plans are underway for
one or more large-group activities to get as much of the group together
as we possibly can.

The DLV Logo Shop is now open. T-shirts and various other logo items are
now available. Thanks to Dorothy for setting up and maintaining the DLV
Logo Shop.

Please note that the DLV logo items are produced and sold by an
independent vendor. DLV receives no income from logo shop sales. Any
difficulties or disputes must be settled directly with the vendor.

One other note, be sure to check sizing on the particular item you
intend to buy. Sizing varies item to item and seems to run on the small
side of things for some items.

There may be some other DLV logo items produced in the near future. Stay
tuned for details.

I am not a meteorologist (IANAM -- hmmmm) but my dad was, and (among
other things at times) he did work as a practicing weather observer and
forecaster (industry, not broadcast). Not much of it rubbed off, but I
admit it was fun to amaze grade school teachers by being able to
identify clouds better than they could. :)

One thing I did learn from him was that the actual conditions at any
day, hour, minute, and second are more dependent on the real-world
variables than they are on the averages, meaning that yes, the last week
in April will, statistically, be 2-3 degrees cooler than the first week
in May, but there's no guarantee that moving DLV one way or the other
will result in weather that's more agreeable to our people.

Looking back, I've seen it in the 90's in late April during DLV, and
I've seen lows in the 50's in May during DLV.

Yes, in 2004 it was warm. It was warmer yet at DLV 1997. However, in
2003 we heard gripes about it being too cold and too breezy. I remember
it being quite cool in the evenings in 2001 as well.

Although Las Vegas weather seems to be more consistent that weather here
in Omaha, there are no guarantees. One thing we haven't seen yet at DLV
is a Las Vegas downpour. Only a matter of time. :) Those can be very
nasty.

I knew I had the exact numbers somewhere, I remember looking them up a
while back and yes, I found them ...

For the April 24-30 period (proposed DLV 2005), the average high
temperature runs 81-83F and the average low runs 56-58F. For the first
week in May (DLV 2004) the average high is 83-85F and the average low is
58-60F or about 2 degrees warmer on average for the first week in May.
I daresay that the average Jane is not gonna notice the difference, or
at least not think it's significant. Truth is, we could have 95F highs
during the last week in April and 70F highs during the first week in
May. It's just the roll of the dice.

I was there last year in late July for a week at a conference. It
rained at least a little every day, and twice those super storms rolled
through. You could see them coming (huge black walls of clouds) and the
TV weather people would interrupt programming to let you know about it.

Very fast moving. High winds, torrent rains, street flooding, then an
hour later everything dried up and the sun was back out. Locals told me
it was even more common to see that in early August. No rain coat or
umbrella would have stood up to them. Definitely different than any
other weather I had ever encountered there at other times of the years.

I agree with this. Last year (2003) I was there almost all the following
week and the temperatures plummeted to the 60's and low 70's for at
least a three of the days. It certainly was BELOW the averages stated
above for mid May!

According to the local weather broadcasts the weather we experienced in
2003 was unseasonably warmer than usual. IIRC we didn't have too much
wind either...except when we were playing golf which may have helped
make the temperatures particularly warm!

Its unfortunate but you need to prepared to take hot, warm, and cool
weather clothes to most DLV events. I think its probably safe to say we
won't need snow gear and while a Las Vegas downpour is exactly that the
chances of striking one don't appear to be too high. In 40 plus visits
over 24 years covering well in excess 200 days I've only been in one.

I was once driving south on Industrial behind CP when one of those
monsoons hit. The curve and underpass by Flamingo were flooded and
fortunately nobody was attempting to drive it. It had been raining only
5 minutes or so.

One thing they don't tell you when you check into the Imperial Palace is
that the lower level of the parking structure is right in the path of
what they call Flamingo Wash. If you can imagine a seldom-used drainage
ditch mostly at ground level, that is it. :) They tell me (the ubiquitous
"they") that the IP parking structure becomes a wading pool when one of
those hits.

What is interesting is that Flamingo Wash drains into what is known as
Las Vegas Wash, part of which becomes literally a swamp in the middle of
the desert. The "Wetlands" area extends from over by Sam Boyd Stadium
toward Lake Mead. I was turned on to this by some cow-orkers on a very
impromptu tour of the area one morning. If you have a 4wd vehicle (and
are contractually allowed to drive it off road <VBFG>) this is a very
different thing to do in Las Vegas.

We entered via an unmarked dirt road behind the stadium and cruised a
maze of almost-roads and non-roads and eventually came out over by that
new hoity-toity hotel by Lake Las Vegas.

Sorry for digressing, but that is a very interesting and different
thing to do in Las Vegas, one that you will certainly not read about
in "What's On" magazine. :)
