Autocracy?????

The dictionary defines autocracy as follows:

au toc ra cy

noun, plural -cies.

1. government in which one person has uncontrolled or unlimited
authority over others; the government or power of an absolute
monarch.

2. a nation, state, or community ruled by an autocrat.

3. unlimited authority, power, or influence of one person
in any group.

Although a few whom attend DLV might feel this is the case, I
want to say that it is far from it. Each year at the conclusion
of each and every DLV, you are given the democratic opportunity
to voice your opinion of things we'd like to change or do
differently by filling out the survey.

In fact, a few of the questions are about the BDR. It seems
that those who do take the opportunity to express their opinions
are happy with the BDR as they are. So, quitcha' bitchin' if the
majority is happy with the status quo.

Let's take a few minutes here to clarify who makes the decisions
regarding DLV and how the decisions are made, since this topic
has now come up on and off line recently.

The governing body of DLV is the group of DLV volunteer organizers,
referred to sometimes as DLVORG or just ORG. These are the ones who
have stepped forward and volunteered to help out.

Often, decisions are made by consensus, but if a consensus is not
reached, we, the volunteers, vote.

The ones who have voting status are the ones who are on record as
coordinating or assisting with at least one DLV activity during
the past two annual events.

In other words, those who do the work make the decisions. That's
the way it should be!

The next ORG mailing, which will come out shortly, will have a
list of those who have voting status for this coming year.

The "minutes" of the ORG group's "meetings", in actuality the
archives of the mailings, are open and available to all.

Most of the nuts-and-bolts decisions regarding the individual
activities are made by those who volunteer to make those activities
happen. Again, those who do the work make the decisions. Each of
our activities are mostly autonomous, and the coordinators are
empowered to do what they need to do, and make the decisions they
need to make, to make those activities happen. This is, of course,
subject to the guidelines set forth by the ORG group as a whole.

The ORG group does have the final say as to what activities appear
on the final schedule, but I know of no case where a sincere
proposal and implementation has ever been rejected.

That's the way it is. Any questions?

The other thing that some don't seem to understand is that *no one
is forced to go to DLV*. If you don't like the guidelines set forth
to help protect the group, then go to Vegas on your own at some
other time and do exactly as you please.
