The topic of a prom-theme activity for DLV comes up in feedback regularly.

The "Awesome ’80s Prom" is now open at the V Theater in Planet Hollywood. It's interactive and participatory, and the audience becomes part of the show.

I think I would pass on this. I attended my high school prom and it was
great but once is enough. Been there done that. I'm sure it would be fun
for those that missed out going to their HS prom.

I doubt many of us had a chance to attend HS Prom in a prom dress. Looks like 80's prom dress up wear is encouraged by the audience. Time to raid the Goodwill shops if we go.

The interactive show will take guests back to the days of “shoulder pads, big hair, preppies and jocks,” including being able to mingle with actors portraying characters from ’80s classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink.”

In honor of the new show, the V Theater’s mezzanine showroom will be “transformed into a prom dance floor with a stage, disco lights, and classic ’80s decor,” according to the owner of the theater, David Saxe.

One of the highlights of the evening should be the chance to pose for an “awkward ’80s prom photo.”

I can see doing this if I was in my twenties, or even in my thirties,
getting a evening and formal make over at Paula's or Amy's (maybe rent a
gown too?) and have Bob in his tux as a date, which would be better than
going by one's self.

Was it called going by one's self as 'stag' or something like that? It
would be cool to tag the limo tour right after this show to do other
things. Which would complete the 'prom' experience. Being formally
dressed to the 9s and a limo ride too. Lots of my HS classmates did
that limo thing after the prom, and it looked cool to do that. Then to
a night club for more dancing, or have a late night snack at the
Bellagio cafe. The surroundings would be perfect. One can also get
drunk in the limo and worry at that time about a DUI.

After some careful thought, I would pass on this too but the reasons
would be for me only.

At my current age I am way beyond looking like the appropriate young
teenager and not even look decent in a prom gown that is more than
likely to be body shape hugging, exposed shoulder, probably gown made
from satin that wrinkles easily, and to complete the 'prom' image have a
corsage on the arm. Getting a complete ensemble of gown and matching
accessories, even if its second hand, and costume jewelry will take time
and money - more than I am willing to put into it.

I would look more like one of the female adult chaperons watching the
underage kids at a prom, with a decent mid torso rise or look like some
of the teen girls that went to their prom very pregnant, or if the teen
girl was overweight. That is just the start for me on my own critique
on how I look.

Though they advertise the dreaded awkward photo shoot, I wonder how many
that go to this show will be dressed in a 80s style gown with corsage, a
hubby or boy friend in tux or rather than casual typical casino clothes.
I wonder how many per night dress up in tuxes and gowns.

Logistically just for myself, even mailing the stuff, the care and stuff
to bring for this dress up would be too much to bring to LV for just one
night.

I've looked for 2nd hand prom dresses at thrift stores for several years
now. Keep in mind the following points when looking - its one of those
buyer be-aware:

1. Some may be bridesmaid dresses that can be very similar
design and material.

2. Many prom or formal gowns are tailored or custom made to the original
girl's figure, height, and arms size and length and not the standard
dress sizes, so it may not fit your body nicely. (ie the shoulders or
waist being smaller)

3. Many prom dresses have been stored away after being worn once as in
years or decades - so besides the perfume the girl had on that night,
and a possibility of sweat and sweat stains, add the strong mothball
smell, for even worse - mold.

4. Many had sweat stains too under the arm area, back, and legs - sweat
from the dancing during or after the prom.

5. Evidence of other insects in the folds of the stored gown - ie:
roaches, roach eggs, body type bugs, ants.

6. Many girls could have had sex sometime that night after the prom or
could had been raped by their date. I found many with semen stains and
smears and other odd colored stains in the correct places where a guy
would touch the girl....found in the front and back, outside and more
inside the gown.

7. You can clean the gown, most of the time its a special dry clean
process that may not guarantee it will clean the problem or the smell,
or if it will remain the same color (get faded) after its cleaned or
remains the same size fit (shrinkage). For many gowns were only worn
once and never cleaned.

I just did a quick look at the Awesome 80s prom at the V theater in
Planet Hollywood - the Planet Hollywood website, and the official photos
of the show.

Its a different viewpoint from the identical press release statements
the ticket companies are showing on their web pages.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing as having prom the way that some
in this disc are thinking, as in going to and having a typical HS prom
circa 1989 and participants wearing a prom formal dress attire as in tux
and gowns.

It states its a interactive show. Its not a actual prom!

Its a staged type "prom" show production, with characters played by
actors whose rolls are going to a 80s prom, and are in different
costumes including some ggs in prom gowns, some women as cheerleaders,
guys dressed too - one as a nerd, another as a biker, another a 'jock'
in a typical school letter 50s baseball jacket, and others in character
representations (ie asian) of stereotypical individuals back in the 80s,
including a spinster type chaperon. One example is one actress in a
prom dress, holding a cabbage patch doll from the 80s.

They are the ones dressed and performing as if in a prom in the 80s.

I haven't seen the show, but I am getting this impression by the show
photos.

As stated its similar in design to very popular and successful wedding
reception show (Tony and Tina's Wedding). So the audience is
interactive with the characters, but not dressed like the show
characters - as in prom formals - but that doesn't stop anyone or a
group to do so. I'm not sure the actors would modify the show to
include those that do, or they may allow it, ad-lib to become part of
that evening entertainment to the rest of the audience that will be just
watching and dressed in casual tourist clothes.

If one is thinking of dressing in a formal prom type dress, and
expecting to go to a actual prom like a real life prom to have a chance
to go to a prom in femme formal dress mode because they didn't do this
or go to their HS prom in femme mode, this can be mis-leading as to the
wrong type of expectation.

The observations are real,and reality is harsh.... However, there is
always hope for some who wish to re-live the moment. Some can come as
the "watanabe prom girl" , and other can come the parent chaperone. All
can enjoy the evening while being dressed to "their full attractiveness"!

Think of this more of a 80s music dance party that combines this with
activities of a prom, complete with actors portraying people in the 80s
and in the movie and music. I'm not sure if any food is sold, but I'm
sure there will be drinks.

Dress casual, or tourist wear, or in a 80s type outfit, or if you are
wanting - dress in a prom gown if you want to.

There will be a vote by the audience participation for a Prom Queen so
you may be selected, and looks like they vote for a few other
categories. I saw a few with wearing a banner saying something "Most
likely to xxxxx", and a tiara. Maybe a few would like to run for that
prom title prize.

You will have to like 80s music too.

For me, I'm one generation too old, but would go if its was music from
the 60s and 70s, and even the 50s, which is closer to my HS prom.

Hi All.
Personally a prom does not interest me at all.

If we voted on an event like this I would say no for several reasons, some of which have already been mentioned.
Lugging the the extra clothes on a plane for one single night and then the price and trouble of renting a hall or room for the event would be 2 of the reasons why. There are more but I would rather not get into them all as it is best to leave it up to the group than for me to spoil it for anyone who had their heart set on a once in a lifetime event like this.
If we had a Prom I would give it a bye. I know this is not what the prom group would like to hear but as we need to know how many would actually attend to make it a success then I have to say that I would not.
