What is a Mt. Charleston Excursion??

Or, more properly, what will it amount to? A Mt. Charleston excursion
will be a wonderful joyride up to the tip top of beautiful Mt.
Charleston where we will glory in its majestic natural splendor while
overlooking the senic panarama of the glorious Las Vegas valley below.
It was born of someone's dream of a skiing event that absorbed a
considerable amount of speculation among us about the possibility of
some of us actually going skiing at Diva this April. However, due to
the many uncertainties we encountered, it was decided to downsize the
event to a simple pleasant daytrip up to the mountain, instead, with the
possibility of skiing being kept in reserve until April when we will be
closer to real time circumstances, such as snow.

So, with that in mind, all interested participants who would like to
take a half-day break from the hustle and bustle of in town activities,
are asked to meet at Betty's Cyber Cafe, just inside the east rear
entrance to Imperial Palace Hotel, and just south of the elevator
mezzanine - giving us easy access to the parking garage - at around
9:00am Thursday morning. At this point, no sign up is requested; just
show up, please. We will then ask for volunteer drivers with cars who
might be willing to drive us up to the mountain for a $15.oo gas
donation from each one of us - that assumes three to four passengers per
car. We will take the US 95 freeway to the Kyle Canyon Rd. exit, and
make our way up the mountain from there. Admittedly, there remain many
assumptions and uncertainties at this point, and we won't know if the
event will take place until the actual moment arrives, and by then it
will be obvious to any and all concerned whether we have a "go" or a "no
go" - kinda' like a space shuttle shot, in a way. It will be cooler up
there, so bring leg covering and a warm jacket or sweater, and maybe a
head covering too. See you soon,

Cynthia

For newcomers to Mt Charleston:

Keep in mind that the elevation at the end of Kyle Canyon Road is about
7300' and in Lee Canyon at the Ski resort, it's about 8,600'. Anyone
with breathing difficulties may have problems. Also, don't expect to be
at the "tip top" as the tip top is almost 12,000'. The only way to get
there, in the summer, is a 5-6 hour hike, or longer in the winter on
snowshoes.
