The reason the Riviera has such good rates is because they are really hurting for business! I know there were bankruptcy proceedings last summer, but I do not know of any outcome.

The reason is a double-whammy, both whams being brought on by the recession. First is the slowdown which has affected all Las Vegas Properties. The second is that they and Circus-Circus are literally stranded on a desert island on the center Strip with very little foot traffic. They used to have the Frontier, Stardust, and Westward Ho with them in the area, but no more. The halted Echelon Place was to occupy the former Stardust and Westward Ho properties, but it's an abandoned construction tract. The Plaza or Frisco or whatever the Frontier replacement was to be is also a dead project. This leaves Riviera and Circus with Treasure Island several blocks to the south and the Sahara several blocks to the north.

I have not personally visited the Riviera property in the last two years, so I can't personally testify as to the conditions. However, I would expect conditions similar to those at the Sahara, namely cutbacks and deferred maintenance.

One other disadvantage is that you will probably need a vehicle if you stay there. The closest Monorail stop is a good 1/2 mile away at the Hilton.

In years gone by I've stayed at the Riviera many times for both business and pleasure. It used to be my second choice if I could not get a good rate at the Stardust. In fact, I stayed at the Riviera for the very first DLV back in 1997. We've had others stay there off and on over the years and I can't remember any major issues.

My personal suggestion is that with today's economic situation, something like the Imperial Palace won't be that much more expensive and is closer to the center of the action with better transportation options.

Thanks, I will book the IP. I was going to try for Paris (I had stayed
there about a year ago) but for whatever reason, their rates are quite
high that week ($185/night, I believe).

Paris is always high! Usually twice as much as the Flamingo, if not more.

Last I knew, the IP Capri rooms were going for something like $25 per night during DLV week. No, I am not making that up!

That $25 figure was being bounced around on one of the LV talk boards maybe a week or so ago as an example of how low room rates have gone. No dates were specified.

In checking www.harrahs.com using the DLV dates the rate for a Capri room at the IP comes out to an average of $28 per night.

Paris is, as was cited, $180-some per night.

It might be helpful to rename this thread "where are we staying" to share info on...well, where we're staying and also to comment on rates.

I was looking at booking a regular tower room at IP but it wasn't all that much more per night for MGM Grand, $89 per night. The reviews on MGM are overwhelmingly positive, I think it was rated a top ten reviewed hotel in Vegas on Expedia. The other thing Expedia had was a rate for Paris at $116 which was also very enticing but I went with the larger room at MGM.

No matter where someone wants to stay, there seems to be some great deals on Expedia & vegas.com.

I stayed at the MGM once. You are right that it is a nice hotel, but it is soooooo big. It took me 20 minutes to get from my room to the front door, waiting for elevators and walking through the huge casino. This year I will be staying at the IP. I was able to get a deluxe room for $50 (ave) per night.
I haven't stayed at the Riviera since the early 90's. I remember the casino staff being a little cool towards my TG friend and me, but that was a long time ago.
