Close encounters of the cd kind

Hi Everyone,

I had a interesting experience on the night we saw the production show
at the Tropicanna.

It was before the show started, when everyone was getting seated and
some went to get something to drink. I decided to get a drink and
walked over to the side and stood in line.

To understand this, one must know who I am (Yvonne) and also Annie.

When I stood in line, there was a gentleman infront of me, Annie in
front of him, and another dlv attendee in front of Annie.

After about a minute or so waiting in line, the guy in front of me
notices the hair and red pvc dress of the the dlv attendee in front of
Annie.

He turns around to talk to me, pointing to the dlv attendee and
saying."I woudn't mind getting a hair cut like that!!!". He smiled and
I smiled back. He then said,"So where are you from?" I responded in my
best femme voice, "Hawaii". He then says "Oh, I have some relatives
that live in a Hawaii, and I haven't been there for about 26
years....there must have been alot of changes?" I responded "Yes there
has been alot of changes". He was first startled that I didn't want to
continue the conversation... then it hit him....

At this point his facal expression changed ....from a smiling face to a
blank face, as if fear or realisation of who he is talking to (ie he
read me). He then gives me the once over. His head and eyes move down
to look at my feet and then up all the way to the top of my head. He
didn't say a thing....just stared at me at times squinting his eyes at
me.

After about 1 minute of looking me over....with a questionable look on
his face and in a wavering voice.... he said " well....uh.....you
know.... I was just...... making light conversation while in line......
and he backs up a bit and turns back to the look towards the bar and
Annie in front of him.

He immediate goes up to Annie, and asks her if there are any drinks that
have rum in it. Annie of course answers him, and I watched his reaction.
First his top half of his body move backwards, arms stiff and straight
out from his sides, as if he was about to fall down backwards....then
he took some small steps back, as if startled to what he was seeing and
hearing. He then did a quick glance at me and then again back at
Annie....with a wide eyed look on his face.

At this point, Annie turned back to stand in line, and he was very very
quiet standing there. About 20 seconds passed, and the other line had
opened up and he immediately almost running went to that line to order
his drinks....and quickly left.

I could almost read his mind.... he sees a CD then he turns and talks
about it to the person behind him, not initially realizing that it is
also a CD (me),, then realizing who I am.... then turns again to talk
to the person in front of him, and again is shocked when he realizes
its another CD.... when Annie talked to him, pointing out drinks on the
menu.

It was classic, I had to hold back myself from bursting out in
laughter... and just smiled.

The Folies show was good...similar but better than the one I had seen
several years before. The current show moved alot faster. I sat on the
edge of the 'horseshoe' table and had to turn to see the show with my
feet dangling in the walk way... and I had no problems with doing that.

Speaking very freely, this was somebody who was not dressed
appropriately for a mainstream venue, and was attracting a fair amount
of the wrong kind of attention. There were two civilian guys standing
between me and this attendee. I was watching their actions.

The one kinda pokes his buddy and points. They speak softly, the other
shakes his head. He walks up toward the bar and reads or pretends to
read the menu. He then turns around and checks out our attendee, after
which he gets back on line and he and his buddy chat and giggle.

Unfortunately when this happens it draws attention to the whole group.

HI Yvonne:

There must be something about the Tropicana but something similar
happened to me. I was waiting near the front entrance, sitting at one
of the slot machine when one of the DLV girls passed by. A man sitting
next to me turned to me and said "that was a man. I politely smiled at
him, not saying anything.

Annie, you and the other gals who know better have said it time and
time again. If you dress like a hooker in a mainstream venue (and AND
on too of that, to put it bluntly, you look like a guy in a dress),
well you're only asking for this type of embarrassment. Ladies, for
2006 heed the advise of those who know!! Know where and when to dress
accordingly.

Yvonne,

He must have thought for a moment he had died and gone to CD heaven,or
his travel agent booked his Las Vegas vacation the wrong time of the
year. He'll probably demand a refund.

98% of our people "get it", but unfortunately about 2% of our people do
not. Even most of those who had issues in the past were well behaved and
appropriately (I might be tempted to use the term "classy" in a couple
of cases) dressed for DLV 2004 and 2005.

The one thing I do know, however, is that 100% of our attendees
who registered in advance did was to agree to dress and behave
appropriately. (All 3 of those who were noted for issues and incidents
did, I checked.) They did not follow through on this agreement.

I'll go as far, pushover that I am, as to give the one newbee the
benefit of the doubt of possibly being clueless -- the most she will
see is a brief chat in the company of Guida and the clue-by-four
should she return, -- but the other 2 are returnees and do know what
is expected.

Plans are underway to contact these two people, and let them know in
no certain terms that they are under a final warning to, as the cliche'
says, shape up or ship out.

My hunch tells me that in one case, we'll get a tacit apology and a
vague promise to pay $50 and pick up the garbage in the snow and never
be seen in a miniskirt in Bahama Breeze again, but in the other case my
hunch is that it will not be received well at all. (Who? Me?)

I hate to see anybody miss out on DLV, but if they're not going to dress
and act appropriately, it's for the better that they not attend. Sorry
for being so blunt, but I think most of our organizers and attendees
would agree.

Unfortunately, because of these 3 individuals, we've learned the hard
way that if we let up on attention to B/D/R issues (this has been the
working abbreviation for behavior, dress, and restroom) some people
will consider themselves only and take advantage of the situation.

Yes, for DLV 2006 there will again be increased attention to being
100% sure that everybody who attends knows what's expected.

Now, we're not the only event to see these issues. One of the largest T*
events there is had a restroom incident during a planning session that
sounded like a replay of one of the DLV 2003 incidents. That event did
adopt some policies and procedures that were quite similar to ours.

Rosada,

I just read your post below and tried to send you a message off list,
but it came back! You are definately one class act! I missed you this
year at DLV and want to keep in touch! Send me an email sometime if you
