Parking and biking (was Re: Taming of the Shrew ...)

Despite the extortive parking rates in the downtown area, most suburban hotels and motels have free parking. The "OJ Hotel" on Cumberland, where I know you stayed at least once, is one of them. It's also more hilly in that part of the area than it is closer to the lake.

I've known people who have driven to Chicago, parked in the long term lot at Midway, and taken the train to the city as the long term rates are lower than the loop area daily rates. You can take a bike on the El except in rush hours and most (all?) CTA buses have bike racks.

The one time I drove to Pinkfest the car mostly stayed in the lot at the hotel.

There's a little no frills motel called The Ohio House at Ohio & LaSalle
that has free parking. Like I said, nothing fancy but clean and
friendly. I enjoyed my stay. Also parking under Millennium Park is
cheaper than most hotels if you keep it parked the whole time and make a
reservation online.

That motel has been on our radar screen since the early 2000s. You're the first who has reported staying in it first hand.

None of us have been curious or brave enough to try it.

I've heard of it, but more comfortable in the burbs, parking for AirBnBs
in Chicago is usually on the street and you takes your chances! Trying
to manage a bike and luggage on the train would be an issue, but I guess
one could make two trips,

I also like the Carleton in Oak Park. They have a reasonably priced
motel section and a nicer hotel section. And it's at the end of the
Green Line if you want to do cta into the city.

Thanks for mentioning the Carleton, looks better than the Write Inn.

I stayed in a Air BnB in Oak Park when my original booking near the
Lakeshore was cancelled at the last moment. The ride out and back on the
train is not that bad, but there are stops in between the Loop and near
Oak Park that seem to have some very rough people which was a bit scary
late at night in cars sparsely populated or empty except for me.
