Only 114 days left, gang!

Official hotel:

As some of you know, the idea of an "Official" or "strongly suggested"
hotel has been discussed quite a bit. Yes, I agree it would be a good
thing to get as many of our people in one place if possible.

I would like to call for discussion on this topic with the goal of
deciding the "Official Hotel" issue by the end of January.

I see two possible types of designation, one being that we decide upon
one hotel as our "Official" quarters and the base of our operations for
DLV 2001, and the other that we decide to "strongly recommend" one
particular hotel for all our people coming to DLV 2001.

The Imperial Palace appears to be the frontrunner for either, since it
has a history with DLV people since the beginning. It's known to be
t-friendly, it's conveniently located, and reasonable rates are almost
always available.

The Sahara is another candidate. It's known to be t-friendly and the
rates are reasonable, a bit lower than the Imperial Palace.

We're gonna have people staying at both the above, whether or not we
declare them official or not.

Vendors and such:

I would like to ask a favor of all, especially returnees, Las Vegas
locals, and those who visit Las Vegas frequently. I would like to have
our recommended vendor list current and accurate in anticipation of
DLV 2001.

Please take a look at the list at the url:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/lvvendors.html

... and check it over for such things as outdated information, errors,
and most importantly, omissions. A few updates have come in over the
past month or so (thanks, gang) and the page should now reflect them.

Matinee movie notes:

That sounds great. If anybody is gonna be arriving early Friday and
wants to get in on this, or for some other reason can't make the
Thursday thing at Keys, phone or page on Friday (numbers will be given
out right before DLV) and we'll tell you where and when.

>And this would give me the opportunity to remind everyone

Yes, casual is the custom for just about everything in Las Vegas during
the day. Don't worry, there will be many times to really put on the
dog if you wanna do that. :)

If you're dumbfounded about just what to wear to something like this,
just go to one of your local theaters some afternoon and look for gg's
of your approximate age, size, etc., and observe what they are wearing.

Big Sisters:

Tina writes:

This is probably a good opportunity to introduce our Big Sister Program
to the new people.

Each year we get a few of those who have quite a bit of public experience
and are comfortable with others to act as volunteer Big Sisters. Previously
we've made them available at DLV, but this year we're having pre-DLV Big
Sisters as well.

Our Big Sisters are now available to you if you have questions or concerns
that you would like to handle on a 1 to 1 basis, either by phone or by
e-mail. If you're a bit uncertain or nervous, this is for you.

Just send e-mail to dlv@geekbabe.com and state you would like to contact
a Big Sister. We will forward your note to one of our volunteers and have
her contact you.

This doesn't replace this list's function for general questions and
answers, it's for things you would like to keep personal between you and
a trusted friend.

When we get to Las Vegas, the Big Sisters will be available to you at
short notice if you have concerns or problems, if you have any problems,
or if you're just feeling a bit uneasy and want to talk to somebody.

If you find you've got a case of the jitters and can't get the nerve to
walk out of your hotel room (hey, this has happened, and it's nothing to
be ashamed of), just give us a call and we'll get a Big Sister over to
you pronto to reassure you and escort you to the group.

If you're unfamiliar with Las Vegas, we can have somebody meet you at
the airport, get you to your hotel, get you settled, and show you where
things are.

>DLV is a wonderful experience, and a lot of fun, so don't miss it.

Yes it is! And those who had their doubts almost always rave about how
they were glad they did not miss it.

>Let us help you do it.

I really think the area of hospitality is where we run circles around
the mainline t* conventions. Feedback over the past 4 years shows this
is really one area of strength we have.

Air tours, RHPS, etc.:

>It sounds like it's going to be a really great trip this year. I'm
>still not sure if {my so} is coming with me or not, but I've told him that
>the children are definitely not coming.

IMAO, Las Vegas is not a place for kids, despite the newer "theme"
properties. (Ask me to tell the story of my Dad, a certain youngster,
and a casino security guard. ... Actually two stories. :)

>You might want to see if anyone is interested in air tours of the area.
>I can take small groups of 2-3 people, and the only cost would be the
>fuel, which is about $20 an hour and can be split between the

Ok, what time(s) on the schedule would work for you? I'm sure there
will be people who would like to do this.

>I'm also especially interested in golf, the Rhyolite trip, and of
>course, Kenny Kerr and RHPS.

Golfers, please think of what time(s) will work.

Yes, we're gonna go to Rhyolite this year, even if it's only you and
me going. :)

For Kenny Kerr, think positive!

Rocky Horror is always a good time. Don't dream it, be it. :)

>It would be nice if I had a few minutes to get made up for Rocky Horror
>after the show, though. I think it's fun to wear really radical makeup,
>but the last two times, I've had to race over there, having only enough
>time to slam two or three quick drinks in a nearby bar between the show
>and the movie.

I think this all depends on what time the featured show of the evening
is. Actually, last year, I was kinda hoping more people would not change
and go to RHPS as they were dressed for the show. That kind of dress
*would* be appropriate for RHPS. Of course you could always carry enough
stuff and do a quick change in the ladies room of the theater. (I guess
I should talk, one of the local girls was using my hotel room to change
for the show, and when I took her back, I kinda changed into jeans and
a t-shirt for RHPS.)

SO's activity:

Thanks, Laura. This is something that would fit in most any afternoon
as an optional activity. Please let us know when you decide where on
the schedule it will fit.

As you can see from below, a number of SO's will be coming.

Yes, Monday is the DLV send-off affair. No location has been decided
upon, and no particular theme, if any has been planned. Ideas?

Well, we do have a few totally new activities in there this year,
such as the limousine ride Sunday evening. I'm looking forward to
that one.

>While we got a lot of suggestions, we didn't get a lot of comment (one

>with that! :-)

While most of the evenings are filled, there are still some afternoon
slots, as well as morning, if anybody wants to plan things for then.
We do have the option of alternate-track activities for many of those
already scheduled in the afternoon and late at night.

>Meanwhile, I personally like the look of the 2001 schedule. It has a
>lot of favorites, plus some new things. And many repeats are happening
>on different nights of the week, which should give it a different feel.

Most of the repeated items are those that are proven winners. The only
evening that's a bit shaky is Saturday, when we plan(ned) to go to see
Kenny Kerr. If things should fall thru for Kenny, and they don't get a
new venue and show off the ground, we may have to find an alternate
feature activity for that timeslot. However, there are so many things
going on, it shouldn't be difficult. Please be thinking of ideas in
case the Kenny Kerr thing does not work out.

Mailbag:

>I'd really hope to come, I've been to conventions and really
>would like to try a "vacation".

Great. It is a lot of fun. Very rewarding.

>My largest concern is I don't know of anyone who has been to DLV, and
>being split between hotels etc. I wonder about "finding" each other.

As you probably read, we're trying to get some kind of an official hotel
this year, but since this is a volunteer effort, this will probably not
be for sure until after the holidays.

As to finding each other, I'll be carrying a cell phone and a pager all
the time, and we use these as a "hotline" in case somebody gets lost or
has difficulty finding the group. We'll send out the numbers to those
who are registered shortly before DLV.

We also send out very explicit instructions as to how to get to each and
every event prior to DLV. We know many people don't know the area well,
and may be a bit nervous, and may be shy asking strangers for directions,
so we try to be specific enough to lead everybody exactly where they are
supposed to be.

Even if you don't know anybody before attending DLV, you will be among
friends. The regulars are a super group of people! Very outgoing and
inclusive. Newcomers report they feel "part of the group" almost
immediately.

>I
>didn't call the IP yet, but I had heard their rates were pretty good
>for Vegas.

The IP has more reasonable rates than most of the other places in the
area. I know we will have people staying there whether or not we
designate it the official DLV hotel. A hint on the IP, you can often get
lower rates than quoted on their website or from their desk by checking
with travel agents, vacation promoters, room brokers, etc. (See note in
last mailing. It's in the archives if you didn't save it.)

Rhyolite:

>I just took a trip to Las Vegas. I finally made it to Rhyolite and it
>was well worth the drive in the rental car, although I didn't realize
>that it was 125 miles from Vegas.

Hmmmm .... I didn't think it was *that* far. Anyway, that's just a couple
hours, and it will be a good getaway for Monday afternoon. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Airfare:

>> As expected, air prices have dropped.

>I couldn't believe how cheap the fares are right now.

I second this! I was astounded to see what is available, plus the
lowball fares are *really* bookable and seats are really available at
those rates!

>My company lets
>us book personal travel through the Company's travel agency (American
>Express) which gets us a discounted fare. I got $168 round-trip (tax
>included!!) on American. This is way cheaper than anything I ever got
>to LV from Texas before. Of course, it has many, many restrictions.

Since I'll also be attending N+I on this trip, I have to book thru the
in-house TA. I'm getting $194 roundtrip on America West. Most all major
carriers and most all flights were available at this price. (Southwest
was actually a few $$$ higher at $198.) I just chose the one that fit
the planned schedule the best.

They were showing the $168 fare as well for me, but flights and days
just did not work. This fare was real and bookable too, just not when I
needed it to be.

If I wanted to fly both in and out on Saturday, both Northwest and
Southwest are showing a real, bookable RT fare for $158.

>I'm not a travel expert, although I average 35 weeks a year on the road
>in my job; so, I do know prices. I haven't seen fares this cheap in
>years. I really do urge everyone who is thinking about coming to make
>your plans now and save some money.

Yes! Prices are not gonna be lower between now and DLV. The Southwest
$99 each way deal expires January 16 (a little over a week from now) and
our TA expects all the $194/198 fares to disappear at that time.

Book early (book often).
