Only 86 days left, gang!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
About this mailing:

First of all, welcome to those who just joined the list. For the third
week going we've had a number of people join. If you have any questions
or concerns, please let us know.

Sorry this mailing may be a bit long. Lots of things happening.

There were a few items that came in this week that I'm holding, since
there's a lot of material in this mailing. The larger items that do not
appear to be time sensitive will be included in a week or two, as I
don't want the mailings to be so large that people will skim and skip.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Registration notes:

Have you registered yet?

If you're planning on attending DLV 2001 and have not already done so,
please visit the url http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/register.html and
answer a few brief questions.

This will help us better plan for DLV and will allow us to answer your
most popular question, "how many people are coming" earlier and more
accurately.

Note to regulars, returnees, volunteers, and Las Vegas Locals: Please
register. Nobody is assumed to be on the list, and nobody is on the
list by default. We have a number of people who have stated they
will definitely be coming who have not registered. Your cooperation
is appreciated.

In February we will be doing a clean-up of the registrations and sending
out a confirmation notice to all who have registered in order that
corrections and updates can be made. Once the list is cleaned up we can
do some headcount projections.

Thanks, gang.

Group photos:

>Last year we agreed we were going to have group photos at some, specific
>events. Perhaps now would be a good time to specify those events and
>them on the schedule.

Well, obviously one of the best times will be at the Friday evening
welcome celebration. Let's get that on the schedule. Another good one
will be right after the Kenny Kerr show on Saturday evening. Those two
will most likely be our best most-people-in-one-place opportunities.
One will be kinda come as you are, the other will be dressy.

Do these sound ok to everybody?

>As long as I'm there I'm happy to take the photos.

We want you in them! I'm sure we can find a volunteer to juggle cameras
as we did last year, or we can use somebody who positively does not
want to be in the photos.

And for those listening in, it's perfectly "ok" to opt out of these if
you're not comfortable. I remember a number of people who were at the
welcome thing last year who do not appear in the group photo.

Amateur shows:

>I will be there for DLV-2001 and would like to perform at the clubs too,
>I perform reg on stage in the drag shows here in Wichita,Ks . I do about
>60 to 80 shows each year .

>If you could give me club names and phone numbers , what nights are for
>walk in's. Or I will just book in to the reg. shows as an out of town
>guest performer.

I'm gonna give you 3 leads here. The obvious first choice would be the
Las Vegas Lounge, which was a favorite hangout of the DLV 2000 people.
This place is t* owned and operated. This is the only place I know of
where I'm sure they have the regular amateur shows.

They tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that the Spotlight Lounge also has
some shows. I've never been there, but I've heard nothing negative about
it.

Keys does occasionally have amateur performers, but it's mostly a piano
bar with piano/singer and various MOR variety acts.

Here's the contact info. All area codes 702. All these are in the same
general area of town, near Commercial Center.

Golf feedback:

>> Anyway, depending on whether someone can book early enough for the
>> weekend (mornings), it looks like another Monday tee time is our best
[snip]

> Golfers, let your thoughts be known, please.
[chomp]

>My preferences would be any days except Sunday and Monday.

Looking on the schedule, Thursday morning and afternoon are the "most
open" times. Friday morning or afternoon (as a second track) looks like
it would fit as well.

Remember your sunscreen this year, ladies. :)

>Since we moved DLV to before N+I this has now caused a slight scheduling
>problem as the N+I people have started many of the programs a day
>earlier, that is Sunday! In my case I will be going to N+I Sunday and
>Monday for Strategic Interop and then conference proper Tues, Wed,
>Thurs, but the point being that neither Sunday or Monday are good for
>me.

>That aside, I'm keen any other day, particularly, Thursday or Friday. I
>think we should avoid the week ends as with fully booked course we may
>just be asking for trouble ...!

Hotels:

>Hi and thanks for the updates - can u recommend hotels and do u have
>phone #s??

This year we're recommending the Imperial Palace and the Sahara for DLV.
Both are known to be t-friendly and both are nice and have reasonable
rates.

The direct number for Imperial Palace is 800-634-6441 and the number
for the Sahara is 888-696-2121.

You can often times get a better deal by going thru an agent or room
broker than thru the hotel directly. One who got a number of DLV people
some good deals at the Imperial Palace last year is listed below. She
knows who we are and what DLV is. Tell her you read about her agency in
this mailing.

Mailbag:

>Ohhh - ahhhh, "sighn" me up for an airplane ride - PLEASE. That really
>sounds exciting!

Ok, you're signed up. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Coming in on Thursday:

>I was going to book room at the imperial...r u staying there...

I don't know yet. I (annie) am kinda at the mercy of our corporate
travel people since I'm also attending N+I. I know we already have
others with reservations there, so you will be far from alone.

>I will be arriving thursday and would like to get together with some of
>you ladies if that is ok.....

That's definitely ok, and intended. :)

>pls give me a cell # to call when i get in...

Explicit contact information, detailed schedule, directions to
functions, cell phones of two of the people, and digital pager will
be given to everybody who has registered shortly before the event.

Have you registered yet?

>I cant wait,,,,

Well, I don't want to wait either, but I guess I have to. :) :)

>I was at Southern Comfort last fall and it was my first time...now I go
>out once a week and I love it.......

DLV is quite different from Southern Comfort, as you probably know.

>pls let me know how i can get in touch with others thursday

On Thursday afternoon and evening we will have a shopping expedition
followed by dinner, followed by more shopping, followed by Keys (piano
bar). This will begin about 3:00pm. If you're in and checked in by then,
you can join us. If not, phone or page when you get in and we'll give
you instructions as to where we are at that time, or, if you don't have
a vehicle, we'll send somebody to pick you up.

Just stay tuned, be sure you have your registration in, and if you have
any more questions or concerns, let us know.

Dance clubs:

>I'd like to try at least one 'straight' (whatever that is) dance club en
>femme while I'm in Vegas (perhaps Ra, Rio, or Studio 54). I'll be there
>for the whole week, so I'm thinking of maybe trying one on Monday or
>Tuesday night.

We've discussed just this topic. I've included pointers to the thread
in the list archives below.

These clubs are not really as snooty or exclusive as their aura may
(intentionally) imply. They are there to sell alcohol and to entertain
visitors. (This is not your daddy's Studio 54. :)

All three will probably claim a dress code, and all three will most
likely feign enforcement with an actor playing the archetypal goon
guarding the entrance.

>Do you think any of these three clubs would deny me admission or have a
>clientele that would give me a hard time?

I don't know for sure.

My gut feelings are along these lines: I would speculate that one or two
t-girls, those who are confident and yes, can usually pass, would have
little if any difficulty, especially if they are diluted with a group of
assorted gg's and those in boymode.

Likewise I would suspect if a group of 20 or so t-girls, including those
who are visibly nervous or uptight, descended on one of those venues, it
would attract a lot of attention. Those places are very visual ... you
go there to see and to be seen. People-watchers abound.

The only wannabe-trendy place I've heard of any hassle was The Beach,
where I've been told a local t-girl was either turned away or asked to
leave. This is the place directly across from the Convention Center. They
advertise heavily to the convention crowd, implying it's a place where
convention-goers can score with booth bunnies and local twentyboppers.

The thread about the dance club is intertwined with that of bars in
general and activities in general, and kinda follows these mailings
to the organizational list last year.

Activity thoughts:

>> I used to know where the neon junkyard (Yesco) was. It was kinda secluded
>> west of the Strip off Tropicana. I could probably find it again, but I've
>> been told much of it has been barricaded from public view.

>I've been trying to find out about this place, but no luck so far. Do
>any of the local LV girls know anything about its location?

>I also thought we might try checking with the concierge desk at the
>hotels when we check in to see if they can recommend a place to see the
>old signs (or some type of museum).

I did a few web searches to see if they could jog my memory as to
exactly where this is. Bad news, from Yesco's website:

+ The YESCO Las Vegas Sign Graveyard:
+
+ The back lot of the Las Vegas plant that was
+ known as the Sign or Neon Graveyard no
+ longer exists. It was cleaned out about two
+ years ago to make room for a new 40,000
+ square foot manufacturing building. The
+ majority of the signs, (268 tons), were
+ recycled. So the old Mercedes sign could
+ now possibly be a new Mercedes!

There's a display of some vintage neon (and other) signs at the very
east end of the Fremont Street Experience. In particular I remember
the original incandescent lamp from the Aladdin, the neon sign for
the Flame restaurant (yes, I'm old enough to remember that one), and
a motel sign advertising "Steamed Heat" {sic}.

>Of course, we'll see plenty of live neon during our Sunday night limo
>tour of the Strip. The plan right now is to depart from the Tropicana
>at approx 11:30 PM (after the 10 PM Folies Bergere show lets out,
>including time for makeup fix-up and restroom break). Since the Trop is
>way down at the "bottom" of the Strip, we thought we would just head up
>the Strip at a leisurely pace. It should take about 45 minutes one-way,
>so plenty of time for a return trip, and one or two stops along the way.

>After all, one of the fun things about limousines is making grand
>entrances and exits. Does anyone have any suggestions for some quick
>stops?

Well, for those who don't do the show at the Trop who want to take the
limo tour, we could stop by the IP/Sahara/Wherever to pick them up.
I would like to get some pics of some of our people embarking and
alighting for the web, of course. :) I took a few shots of this, as
well as some in the limo, back at FH 1997.

>On the way back, we will definitely have the limo stop at Keys and the
>LV Lounge, in case any of the girls wish to get off there. We can also
>consider dropping girls off at their hotel (or across the street from
>it) on the return trip.

>Final stop is back at the Tropicana.

And since several of us will probably have our vehicles at the Trop,
this will be a good idea. :)

>We're planning on booking the limo for either 3 or 4 hours, depending on
>required minimum rental period (vendor dependent). Personally, I plan
>to take the whole tour. Look for details soon on the projected cost per
>ticket.

>We also plan to include time for photo opportunities in front of the
>limo.

Hmmmmm, maybe we should schedule a third "official" group photo shoot.

>One thing we unfortunately WON'T be able to include is a downtown side
>trip to the Fremont Street Experience. It looks like the last Fremont
>St show is midnight, which just doesn't fit our timetable.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Can't wait:

>thank you so much...I just cant wait....

You're very welcome. I don't wanna wait either, but I guess I have to.

>I keep shopping for clothes to wear and I dont think I can fit
>everyhting into my suitcase.........

>oh can I ride with someone in their car?......

We will have a van and several others have volunteered to drive.
As long as you're in one of the official hotels (Imperial Palace or
Sahara) or nearby, you most certainly can get a ride to all the
DLV functions.

>I will arrive late wednesday nite so I am available from Thursday
>morning on...
>actually I would like to catch up with anyone who will be out and about
>late wednesday nite cause I know I will be dressed and out as soon as I
>get there....

On Wednesday evening we have dinner at 5:00pm and the Pre-DLV party
at 7:30pm. When you get in, phone or page, and we'll have somebody
pick you up. The Pre-DLV thing will probably last until 10-11 or so,
and then the group may choose to wander to another place. Feel free
to phone or page (numbers will be given out the week before DLV) up
to 11:00pm or so.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Makeovers:

>maybe i've missed it, but is there a place in las vegas that does
>make-overs?

There are two options I'm aware of.

A shop in Commercial Center does this and it's on our vendor list. I'm
gonna ask one of the local ladies to reconfirm this, since there was
some confusion last year.

We'll have a Mary Kay Open House, where the makeover and product samples
will be complimentary. This will be participative, with the reps doing
demonstrating and coaching. We don't have this on the schedule yet, but
it will probably happen some afternoon.
