This mailing:

This mailing consists mostly of various items from DLV's Social Director,
Tina. Some notes about various goings-on surrounding DLV.

We also have some photography notes from Dorothy and a couple misc. items
that have come in since the last mailing.

All items are Tina's unless indicated otherwise.

Motto Contest Winner:

The results are in and the winner of the DLV 2002 Motto Contest is Kate.

Since we seldom use last names online here, although there is no policy
against it (is there anyone out there who doesn't know that my name is
Tina Tawdre, with a French diacritical mark over the final e producing
a long a sound?), we're going to use the honor system to be sure that
the right Kate picks up her prize at the Welcome celebration on
Wednesday night May 1 at Hamburger Mary's. As you recall, the rules
say that you must be present to pick up your prize. Should Kate be
unavailable that night, we'll use some complicated and unfathomable
accounting system to select an alternate winner from one of the other
entrants (Yvonne, Monique, and Mindy), if they're present.

(Note to Annie: Please use your state of the art software to tell me
just how many Kates we have registered.)

a>For those who speak the language, that would go like:

a>$ echo "select count(*) from ppant where fname = 'Kate';" |psql dlv

a>Count
a>-----
a> 1

a>There ya go. :)

Like all contests, all entries become the property of the contest
organizers, so I've shortened the winning entry down to the following
official DLV 2002 Motto:

"DLV: Just be YOU in 2002."

a>Congratulations to Kate and thanks to Tina for organizing the contest.

DLV Blonde Hair Day:

This is the final note re Blonde Hair Day. By this time next week (Sat
4/27), I'll be flying into LV to get a headstart on pool lounging and
sun bathing.

Just a reminder that Wednesday May 1 is DLV Blonde Hair Day. We're
encouraging all DLV girls to go blonde (natural or a wig) for all
activities that day and night. Of course, it is not required, we just
think it's a fun thing to do. You'll love the feeling!

Today's blonde inspirational thoughts come from the official Marilyn
Monroe Web site at www.marilynmonroe.com. An iconic figure that was
larger than reality in both life and death, Marilyn's own words reveal
the complexities of her character. I find many of her statements to
have particular resonance for t-girls:

"I am not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful."

"No one ever told me I was pretty when I was a little girl. All little
girls should be told they are pretty, even if they aren't."

"That's the trouble, a sex symbol becomes a thing. But if I'm going to
be a symbol of something, I'd rather have it sex than some other things
we've got symbols of."

"Sex is part of nature. I go along with nature."

"He [Arthur Miller] wouldn't have married me if I had been nothing but
a dumb blonde."

"I don't want to play sex roles any more. I'm tired of being known as
the girl with the shape."

"I am invariably late for appointments--sometimes as much as two hours.
I've tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too
strong, and too pleasing.

"I don't mind making jokes, but I don't want to look like one."

"Everybody is always tugging at you. They'd all like a sort of chunk
out of you. I don' think they realize it, but it's like 'grrr do this,
grr do that...' But you do want to stay intact--intact and on two
feet."

"It stirs up envy, fame does. People...feel fame gives them some kind
of privilege to walk up to you and say anything to you--and it won't
hurt your feelings--like it's happening to your clothing."

"She [Sadie Thompson] was a girl who knew how to be gay even when she
was sad. And that's important--you know?"

"I want to grow old without facelifts. I want to have the courage to be
loyal to the face I have made."

"With fame, you know, you can read about yourself, somebody else's
ideas about you, but what's important is how you feel about yourself --
for survival and living day to day with what comes up."

"It's all make believe, isn't it?"

AIDS Walk Right Before DLV:

This year, like last year, DLV ends before the LV Gay Pride Parade. For
those arriving even a few days early, there is an opportunity to support
the Nevada AIDS Walk down the Strip on Sunday the 28th. Blurb attached.

Gay & Lesbian
12th Annual AFAN AIDS Walk

Its no gay pride parade, but the annual Aid for AIDS of Nevada Walk
comes pretty darn close as Las Vegas' gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender community and anyone else who supports it wake up way too
early on a Sunday to walk along the Strip to raise money. This event is
rather interesting since it is the only march of any significance that
is permitted to walk the Las Vegas Strip - apparently, the powers that
be realize how influential the stage performers who support this event
really are. This year's walk is expected to draw about 3,500 people and
will end with a massive block party featuring local stage performers
such as Clint Holmes and The Scintas with food provided by the likes of
the trendy PF Chang's China Bistro.

28 Apr, 8am, MGM Mirage Corporate Center, 3260 S Industrial Road, at
Fashion Show Drive, West of Strip (1 702 382 2326 /
http://www.insideafan.com ).

Karaoke Report:

Here's my annual karaoke report, verified by phone this evening with all
the establishments mentioned here. If you want to do karaoke en femme
while at DLV (before, during, or after), look me up.

Sundays: FreeZone 9 PM - 1 AM

Mondays: FreeZone 9 PM - 1 AM
Flex 10 PM - 2 AM

Wednesdays: Goodtimes 10 PM - 1 AM (or a little later)

Now for my personal review of these places, in my personal order of
preference:

1). Flex is a wonderful bar, has a great sound system, and has always
made me feel very welcome. Their karaoke host appears to be the same
guy as last year, and he is also the Wednesday karaoke host at
Goodtimes, (see below). A great guy. They have a neat deal at Flex
where they let you sing 2 songs in a row, if you want to. This is a
great system that some karaoke clubs use. You actually get in more
total songs per hour this way (less mike fumbling and waiting on people
to stand up and walk onstage) and you get more flexibility to work your
material. I love this system and I love Flex. Usually the waiting list
is pretty short, and their CD catalog is pretty good. I'll definitely
be there Monday night for karaoke.

2). Goodtimes is another great bar that loves t-girls. Their sound
system is OK, as is their CD catalog. Their karaoke host is very nice
(same guy as at Flex). Be sure to tip him $1, since he occasionally
wanders away from the mixing board, if you want keep his interest. A
big crowd of regulars sing here, so the wait time is longer, so go early
and stay late. Very friendly bartenders.

Distant 3rd). I've been to FreeZone a few times, but never on karaoke
night, so can't comment on the quality of their karaoke hostess or their
CD catalog.

Of course, long-time DLV attendees know that we've officially boycotted
FreeZone for several years due to the incident back at DLV 2000 where
they individually warned each and every DLV girl at the club that night
not to use the ladies room. (To understand the significance of that,
you have to understand that FreeZone is a gay club.) Several of us
left immediately in protest (after fruitless complaints to the
bartender and doorman) and FreeZone has been red-lighted (i.e. given a
bad report) ever since on the DLV Web site.

Since they are rumored to have improved in this regard, I will try and
stop in Sunday to check out their karaoke if my schedule allows it (I do
have higher priorities). I would NEVER select this place on Monday over
Flex. YMMV.

FreeZone staff definitely need to work on communicating more info on the
phone. I phoned them at 8:08 CDT tonight (which is 6:08 LV time) at a
time that shouldn't have been too busy for them to be polite and/or a
little more forthcoming with information. Maybe the lady who answered
the phone was just auditioning to be a "no comment" spokesperson.
Maybe I'm just a cranky old bitch with a long memory. Here's a near
verbatim transcript:

FZ: FreeZone

Tina: Hello. Do you have karaoke?

FZ: Yes.
<slight pause>

Tina: Which nights do you have karaoke on?

FZ: Sunday and Monday.
<slight pause>

Tina: What times does it start?

FZ: 9 o'clock.
<slight pause>

Tina: How long does it usually last?

FZ: Until 1 AM.
<slight pause>

Tina: OK. Thank you.

FZ: <hangs up>

Digital Cameras and Airport Security:

Dorothy writes:

Thanks, Dorothy. I would like to add a few notes for those who prefer
film cameras. They try to tell you that the x-ray machines at the
security checkpoints will not fog film. Yeah, right, and the Pope is
Jewish!

My suggestion is to buy your film in Las Vegas and have it processed, at
least to the negative level, before you leave. Those small places on the
Strip are very expensive, but there are some indie labs and such places
as Target and Wally World that have civilian prices for film and do a
consistent job in processing. I've been able to talk the people at
Wal-Mart on Trop by Pecos into running a few rolls, negatives only, thru
the machine while I wait.

Anyway, I'm hoping again for a large collection of submitted photographs
for our DLV 2002 follow-up pages.

Activity waiting lists:

>How can we know if we made the waiting list cut or not?

The best and most accurate thing to do is to check with the individual
activity coordinator after you arrive at DLV, once we have a handle on
the latest no-shows and cancellations. This is what will cause people on
the waiting list to be moved up to the "A" list.

It's also possible that the individual coordinators may adjust the quota
slightly, especially on large activities that have short waiting lists.

If you (or anybody) is concerned about where they stand on any particular
activity, write in and we'll tell you. Do keep in mind that activity
sign-ups and changes are coming in continuously, so the lists have been
changing several times per day.

Another Sahara report:

Densie writes:

>I like it better than the Stratosphere or the IP. Of course, I don't
>go there to stay in my room...it's mainly for passing out in after a
>busy day of fun, but I have been known to hang out in their casino,
>play a little VP and take a jackpot over to the buffet.

>I've never tried their pool, don't do public pools, so I can't help you
>there, but I'm happy with the rest of the place.

If anybody want to use one of the pools at the Sahara or anywhere, you
might wanna phone and see if it's open. It varies from hotel to hotel as
to when the pools open in the spring. I know when I stayed over at the
Stardust for DLV, they were in the process of cleaning and opening their
pools while I was there.
